Today marks the beginning of a new endeavor. I have always had the mission of educating others and sharing my insights, but never the courage to start doing so until I started posting on LinkedIn. Tomorrow I’m meeting Edward Furlong. People will ask him about his role in Terminator 2, but I got another gem to pick his brain about: Brainscan. The cult classic from 1994. It’s about a teenager (Furlong) who becomes obsessed with a VR game called "Brainscan." [spoiler alert] In the game, he takes on the role of a killer, and discovers that the murders he commits are happening in real life. [/spoiler end] Its uniqueness led to a solid fanbase. Actually today, it still resonates with people into unconventional storytelling (like me). Here’s why: 1. The Trickster. Obviously, a good story has a multi-dimensional villain that is conjured via a CD-ROM. As a villain, Trickster: - embodies darker aspects of human nature while losing ourselves in immersive experiences, - represents consequences of embracing new tech without fully understanding its impact on society and psychology. Sounds familiar? 2. Blend of reality / fantasy. “Real, unreal, what's the difference?” - Trickster The movie greatly blends elements of reality / fantasy in a VR world. It's a reminder for us creators to find the balance between realism / fantasy in our content creation process. Why? Because realism ensures authenticity and relatability, while fantasy sparks imagination and creativity. This is really important. I believe that when you balance the two, you leverage the full potential of AI to create stories that feel both authentic and imaginative. Win-win. 3. Interactive Storytelling. The VR game "Brainscan" generates scenes based on the user's actions. Will AI allow us to prompt story directions? In stead of watching a movie, we are being one? ”It depends on the individual. What makes Brainscan unique is that it interfaces with your subconscious. You supply the inspiration, and we take care of the rest.” - Trickster brAInscan indeed. Where do you think this will go? ✨ 𝗪𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗽 𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗜-𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻!🔑📖 This week marks the end of my final course before I dive full-time into my thesis: 𝗔𝗜-𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (a course focused on Generative AI for content creation). We capped it off with a "movie night" showcasing GenAI powered by student creativity, in about 2-3 minutes of a short demo that full of creativity, humour, and inspiration! It was amazing to see everyone’s dedication and imagination come to life through AI. A huge shoutout to our amazing course coordinator, Johannes Pfau, for making this the most fun, practical, and creative course I've taken. He struck the perfect balance - challenging us while not overloading us. Here are a few highlights and insights from the course: • 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘀: generative AI is so much more! Our final project, a video trailer, "𝗘𝗰𝗵𝗼 𝗩𝗥 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆" created with Taher Jarjanazi and Marios Iacovou, is a testament to its power. We used AI for almost everything - story, scene generation, background sound, even voiceover!   • 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗯𝘂𝗶 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰1111 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝘆 𝗨𝗜 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀: These free tools allow art enthusiasts, video makers, and even business development teams to leverage amazing AI features locally.  • 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲: Running these tools locally requires significant computing power. Otherwise, consider using online platforms with pre-paid credits will also be helpful!   • 𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 + 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 = 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰: Experimenting with AI to move images from different angles, with the AI magically interpolating scenes, can create stunning short films.  • 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 & 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: This technique lets you generate evolving videos, similar to marvel opening scene! Combine it with motion capture tools for truly groundbreaking visuals.  • 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝗳𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻'𝘀 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿: Free background sound generation just got a whole lot more powerful!  • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Generative AI opens up a world of creative possibilities. But remember, with great power comes great responsibility! ⚖️ This course also brilliantly addressed ethical and sustainability considerations with an introductory ethics course and a fun quiz that highlighted the difficulty of distinguishing human vs. AI-made content. It's a crucial reminder for us to be mindful while using AI.
