Today is #WorldEnvironmentDay, with this year’s theme focusing on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. Restoring land is crucial for protecting and reviving ecosystems globally, which is essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. At #RHIMagnesita, we are committed to environmental recovery and protection in the areas where we operate. We are dedicated to restoring ecological balance, in compliance with environmental legislation and as part of our commitment to the responsible extraction of natural resources. In the region of Brumado in Brazil, we have implemented a Degraded Areas Recovery project (PRAD), which seeks to rehabilitate the soil and minimize erosion processes to allow the reintroduction of native species and the preservation of natural habitats. This initiative focuses on reforestation and rehabilitation of areas previously impacted by mining activities. In the mines that were temporarily closed, the areas identified for vegetation restoration had degraded characteristics, including compacted soil and low water availability. During 2023, we have undertaken a series of insightful actions including planting native seedlings to protect the soil from erosion and restore its ecological balance. A key aspect was the compensatory planting over a recovered area of 9 hectares, which included 18,776 seedlings of 35 species, adhering to environmental legislation.  This effort significantly contributes to the recovery and maintenance of local ecosystems, reaffirming the company's commitment to #environmentalconservation and #sustainable practices in mining.

🏞️ Sarantaporos (~50km), the biggest tributary of the transboundary Aoos/Vjosa River (~270km), has recently been designated as a Protected Natural Formation and Protected Landscape by the Ministry of Environment and Energy. ❗ However, development control regulations and restrictions associated with this designation have not yet been decided, and the river's integrity faces significant challenges. 🚧 The planned installation of approximately 30 small hydropower plants (out of a total of approximately 50 being currently planned for the entire Aoos river system) threatens to fragment the hydrographic network and degrade its ecological integrity! 🔬The #SarantaporosScienceWeek comes to contribute to the effective and full protection of the Aoos river system, filling important gaps in scientific knowledge with regard to the Sarantaporos river biodiversity and natural processes.
