A whole-school approach to wellbeing – where all parts of a school community work together to improve mental wellbeing – is crucial to helping improve children’s mental health. But teachers can’t do this alone – they need support and they also need more opportunities for professional development and training. Lots of positive work has begun, but here are some things we believe would help: - Revamp teacher training to help new teachers develop the knowledge and skills to support students’ mental health. - Prioritise all teachers’ development and wellbeing needs, developing understanding of the connections between staff and student wellbeing. - Require mental health awareness training for all school staff. - Provide up-to-date and evidence-based training about how to support and include neurodivergent children and how to work in partnership with parents and carers. Nearly 80% of UK school staff face mental health challenges due to work-related stress, with over half considering leaving the profession. One-third of staff have sought counselling as a form of treatment.* At a recent NASUWT conference, it was emphasised that teachers need extensive mental health training, particularly in suicide prevention. Among 12,000 respondents, 23% reported increased alcohol use, 12% raised antidepressant use, and 3% admitted to self-harming as a result of work stress. It is crucial to implement practical strategies to support staff wellbeing - promoting a healthy work-life balance, creating a culture of recognition, and enhancing Employee Assistance Programmes. Beyond individual wellbeing, addressing mental health in schools directly impacts productivity, staff retention, and, ultimately, the quality of education for students. The time to act is now. If you are struggling, you can reach out to Education Support and the Samaritans. #SuicidePreventionMonth #TeacherWellbeing #MentalHealth #Support #EAP 📷 Children & Young People Now *Statistics taken from the Teacher Wellbeing Index. School Avoidance - Should we be worried or should we be curious? The rise in kids avoiding school and activities post-Covid can be concerning, often associated with increased anxiety and depression among youth. Advocates, parents, educators, and specialists are collaborating to address this rising issue effectively. The transition to at least some remote learning, reflecting changes in the post-pandemic workplace, is causing students to feel overwhelmed, akin to employee burnout. Many surmise that social media criticism and exclusion are exacerbating youth's fears, leading to a shift towards aligning public schools with private institutions. Developing tools to promote school attendance and fostering a supportive environment are vital in tackling this multifaceted challenge. Prioritizing mental health support is crucial, with the younger generation seeking assistance. While this trend warrants concern, it also offers insight into a changing generation that values wellbeing. Want to discuss how to meaningfully accommodate a young person's mental health needs? Mental health training plays a crucial role in building effective communication and trust with children, especially in challenging environments. Through active listening and communication skills sessions, teachers and para-social workers learned how simple actions like maintaining eye contact, practicing empathy, and listening without interruption can create a safe space for children to express themselves. Role-plays helped participants, like those from Kibate PS, realize the power of non-verbal cues, while para-social workers from Nabweya PS learned the value of listening without immediately offering solutions. These insights have proven transformative in building rapport and trust, making children feel heard and supported. The importance of creating child-friendly environments, applying basic counseling principles, and ensuring confidentiality were emphasized, allowing participants to practice real-life scenarios in a safe space. This type of mental health training not only equips educators and social workers with tools to support vulnerable children but also underscores the need for self-care in maintaining emotional resilience. #MentalHealth #ActiveListening #ChildSafety
