“Better to be purposeful and poor than the opposite” (paraphrasing!). 💡 I just listened to Evan Davis on his BBC R4 show "The Bottom Line" interviewing someone I’ve long admired - Dana Denis-Smith OBE, CEO of Obelisk Support | B Corp Certified - a law firm with a difference founded in 2010. Congratulations to Dana on her OBE announced in the New Year's Honours List - AND for being an incredible female founder, who had a brainwave about helping amazing women lawyers stay in the industry after having children. 💡 Dana explains how she went into law with noble intentions of helping justice be served - but quickly became disenchanted as she noticed there were too few women at the top. Where were they? She fast realised this wasn’t through choice, but due to patriarchal systems which spat women out if they couldn’t cope with inflexible working patterns after having children. She decided to change tack and to pursue her purpose of helping to change this with a new way of working in law. 💡 Obelisk is now an international organisation with 2000 lawyers providing experienced counsel to its global client base, testament to the cross-industry fact that many women want to continue to work - but ideally not at the expense of their family life (where there is a choice…). There are so many synergies between our businesses (although Georgina Blizzard and I had our idea in a pub in Earlsfield rather than the Himalayas!). I believe that my industry (PR) is somewhat more progressive than law, but the data continues to show we are still losing talented women to the “PR Graveyard”. 🤯 20 years after we set up PRN our trade bodies and various groups we belong to are still citing lack of flexibility as an overriding issue. I’d love to team up with Obelisk and forward-thinking firms across the professional services sphere to collectively solve this issue for good. Any ideas or contacts? A: During the DevCo phase, TWTC will do four things: (1) conduct the Call for Projects and curation process, including supporting continued development and path to approval for the curated projects; (2) specify the workings of a fully-fledged TWTC, including corporate, business and administrative elements; (3) support LSE member filings seeking favorable regulatory treatment to sustain multi-year membership; and (4) conduct regulatory and stakeholder advocacy across the West and at FERC.

VGSO is proud to be sponsoring the Victorian Women Lawyer's upcoming online panel event "Intersectionality and Discrimination: The Positive Duty under the Sex Discrimination Act 1984." Our very own Dana Wintermantel, Lead Counsel, will be on the panel of speakers along with Sharmilla Bargon, Senior Solicitor at Redfern Legal Centre, Melanie Schleiger, Special Advisor Strategic Advocacy at Victoria Legal Aid, and Arlou A. Education Lead at the Racial Justice Centre. The discussion will be moderated by Kiara Wagner, a discrimination and sexual harassment lawyer at Victoria Legal Aid and member of VWL's Women in the Public Sector committee. In 2022, significant legislative changes were made to the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 and associated Federal Discrimination Acts, including the introduction of a positive duty to eliminate unlawful conduct such as discrimination, sexual harassment, and victimisation. This event will delve into the impact of these changes and the responsibilities of employers, especially within the public sector. The panel will also explore future-focused questions on the legislation’s intersectional applications and opportunities for improved recognition. Please join us for this amazing opportunity to gain valuable insights and engage with thought leaders on this important topic by registering through the link below. Date: Wednesday 17 July 2024 Time: 6:00-7:00pm Location: Online (via Zoom) Cost: Free (for both members and non-VWL members) Register: https://lnkd.in/gGEzyYxW This event may contain content that meets the CPD needs of lawyers, according to the Uniform CPD (Solicitors) Rules 2015. #SexDiscriminationAct #Intersectionality #Discrimination #PositiveDuty #LegalAid #PublicSector #DiversityAndInclusion

A government that prioritizes corporate interests over individual freedoms erodes public trust and stifles innovation. A society that bans books and bodies while letting businesses run amok isn’t a free society. It’s a society controlled by those with the most money and the least accountability.
