There is an older lady who lives in these vans.. no power,no running water, no toilet.. I have no idea how she gets through a winter, I couldn't. Anyway, asked me about a class 2 licence.. ah, no way! no one in their right mind would ever put her through a C2. She wants a larger home.. I said "mate, you asked and I will be completely honest with you.. you will be wasting your money and you don't have safe driving skills in a C1 small car" (let alone a large camper that she theoretically can drive now). Very scary driving (lack of) ability and it would be questioned if she could ever resit and pass a C1 licence now, I don't feel safe in the old car she drives and as I said to a towie mate who helped her out a few weeks back "yup, driving in that car is an experience!" he said "I bet it is.." (he could see it) . This is where licensing is wrong.. no cut off for light truck, people just see "oh they can do it, I can too, I have the licence now.. so why don't I?" yet their skills in a car so bad they shouldn't be in anything bigger as it is..NZ has alot to learn about licensing and ensuring people are prevented (through licensing) from operating just about anything in a C1 weight range up to 6Ton, 6ton does a heck of a lot of damage if you don't have the skills to manage it. We need a light truck licence.. like Australia, sit a licence in a car.. then you drive a car.. instructors, you're only car instructors until you too hold the licence gain some experience and get the additional assessing and teaching qualifications to become fully fledged trainer-assessors (as I have done and I now hold Australian equilivant qualification to do the job NZCATT5 is the same assessing standard as their truck course demands, just done in a different way but the standards subjects are equilivant). Camper trucks are light trucks.. towing needs a course and endorsement and other special vehicles such as WRTF should be required for C1 up(which they are if operated on the road but it needs to go further re load management, where to operate and how to see problems before they happen such as roll over & OHS). In any case, she thought I was being mean, I shut the conversation down and said "I've been honest with you, at you're age you don't have the brain space to manage new driving styles or improving, you 100% will be throwing good money after bad and not only will you not be able to maintain the licence and even a campervan can be expensive to keep on the road, you couldn't afford it" so therein lies a big problem.. what people see as a carefree easy lifestyle but in reality can't see the cost.. hence why a campervan course should have things like this covered. Sure, I feel bad an old person is living in a pair of smelly caravans - she really needs supported housing and asap. we are starting to fail old folk here that have fallen on hard times and need some support to address issues, living in substandard accomodation unfair.

As a dedicated driving instructor, I have observed that the current system for obtaining a Certificate 4 in driving instruction needs to be revised to prepare competent instructors. The assessments only focus on the ability to check if the learner can stop at a Stop sign, not speed, and perform manoeuvres required to pass the test while ignoring the vital skills for creating proficient drivers. This system has allowed less competent institutions to prioritize only superficial training methods. It is time for a change. To prevent students from obtaining their licenses without the necessary skills required, we must improve the auditing process for driver trainers and enhance their training so that they can teach drivers how to drive, not just pass a test. A practical approach ensures learners are well-equipped to become competent drivers. Instead of imposing a specific number of driving hours and more boxes for the learner to tick, we must improve our country's driving instruction quality. This is the best way to produce competent drivers who are safe on our roads. As responsible citizens, we must urge the government to consider improving the country's driving instruction quality. We must create a system prioritising practical training and essential competencies and techniques. This will undoubtedly enhance the overall safety of our roads and produce competent drivers who will make our nation proud. #RoadSafetyMATTERS #heavyvehicletraining #heavyvehicle #licenceupgrade #trucklicence #licence #trucklife #truckdriver #truckschool #trainingcanberra #transportcanberra #canberra https://lnkd.in/dU7TSYem

"There are so many driver trainers that are just ticking and flicking. They don’t care about safety or the quality of drivers they are putting out on our roads."
