Caledonian Marine Assets Ltd (CMAL) has announced the issuing of a tender for the first phase of Scotland’s Small Vessel Replacement Programme (SVRP), involving seven new electric ferries along with shore power facilities and port upgrades. As part of the SVRP plan, a competitive tender process has been launched for the new ferries, the first stage to assess if the shipyards interested in bidding for the contract meet the financial and technical criteria to take on the project. This Phase 1 of the SVRP is estimated to cost around £175 million (€208 million) with the contracts planned to be awarded for March 2025. CMAL is an asset-owning company wholly owned by the Scottish government and CalMac Ferries, better known as Caledonian MacBrayne, and operator of the vessels. Diverse routes and ships The highlands and islands of Scotland’s Western Isles and Clyde are heavily dependent on ferries providing both a lifeline for local communities as well as catering for the region’s busy tourist industry. CMAL currently owns 37 ferries, 32 of which are operated by CalMac Ferries Limited, with three operated by Serco Northlink Ferries running between Aberdeen and Orkney and Shetland. The fleet is varied in size, ranging from the outboard motor-powered landing craft Carvoria, accommodating one car and 12 passengers to the Loch Seaforth with a capacity of 130 cars or 20 HGVs and 700 passengers. Some of CalMac’s routes are suited for double-ended ferries and it is this part of its operation the new electric vessels are planned to serve, including the Colintraive to Rhubodach (Bute), Lochaline to Fishnish (Mull), Tarbert (Loch Fyne) to Portavadie (Peninsula), Iona to Fionnphort (Mull), Sconser to Raasay, Tobermory to Kilchoan and Tayinloan to Gigha routes. Amsterdam is ground zero for the increased focus on destination management along with the convergence of tourism and business attraction/talent attraction. The city is limiting cruise ships in the short term and banning them in the long term as part of an effort to address overtoruism. It is one of several initiatives the city has introduced to control crowds and respond to concerns by residents of a city growing too fast for its own good. “If we don’t do this now, we will become less attractive as a city for people and companies. And that will cost more money in the long run.” Too much tourism means unhappy residents, which limits talent competitiveness, which keeps businesses away. It’s all linked. I love how aggressive Amsterdam has been on this front. Some might say too little or too late, but not many cities have been this bold to react to what has become an insatiable demand.

✋ 'We cannot accept that Northern #Norway once again ends up at the bottom of the priority list...' 🛤️ 🚞 Norway’s #NordlandLine has reopened, but SJ Norge's #NightTrains will still be cancelled until 'well into 2025'... That's after the only rail connection between central Norway and its northern regions was shuttered following a fatal train #derailment that hobbled the service. Imagine travel where every seat is comfortable, even economy. Where you can arrive a few minutes before your trip and just walk on. There's ample room for luggage. There's even a bar on board. The Wi-Fi is dependable and often included with your ticket, allowing you to work or stream content during travel. When you arrive in an hour or two and walk off, you're already in the center of the city. Think this is too good to be true? Think again. This type of travel exists all over the world, except in North America. It's called high-speed rail. Here's how to make it happen. https://lnkd.in/gR7ddQ4n
Building high-speed rail is ‘not for the faint-hearted.’ Here’s how to get started.

The answer to this headline is "no," says the Washington State Ferries new leader, Steven Nevey. Makes sense. Switching now from constructing 5 new hybrid-electric ferries - the nationwide bidding for which opened last week - to diesel-powered ferries will not deliver boats any faster. "It's not the hybrid technology that is slowing [the construction] down." It's the fact that until the rules recently changed, WSF could only contract with in-state shipyards for the construction, and the one shipyard in Washington state big (and experienced) enough to handle this contract submitted a bid that was far too rich for WSF to accept. After a change in the Washington-only rule, bidding out the construction nationwide is now underway (subject to a healthy discount for in-state shipyards to enable them to compete against shipyards located in regions with lower costs of living). To switch the power source now would put the project back on the drawing table (literally) and WSF would be months (if not years) away from putting the contract out for bid. Perhaps more importantly for the many ferry-riders in western Washington, "Nevey said that the ferry system was in a crisis two years ago, but today, it's in recovery. He noted that between January and April, the system had a service reliability of about 99%. During that same time in 2023, it was 97.8%. Officials are also looking at making scheduling changes to improve current ferry operations. A challenge given that the system [only] has 15 vessels currently available [compared to 24 available in 2015]." https://lnkd.in/gCJVX_gP
Could opting for diesel-powered over electric ferries get Washington new boats faster?
