💙 It’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is a great opportunity to open up discussions around creating an inclusive and open environment for everyone. That’s why we asked our Disability and Neurodiversity Network co-chairs, Fran and Tom, to share their tips on how we can be allies to people who are neurodivergent or have disabilities, at work and in our personal lives. The United Nations (UN) theme for the International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPwD) in 2024 is "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future." This theme inspires us to recognise the vital role that individuals with disabilities play in shaping a better future through leadership. IDPwD is a powerful opportunity for the global community to promote awareness, understanding, and acceptance of people with disabilities. Since 1992, IDPwD has been a call to action for creating a world where everyone can thrive. Each year, the UN sets a theme for this significant day, guiding us to strive for inclusivity by breaking down the physical, technological, and attitudinal barriers. https://lnkd.in/gyM_Jrt

December 3rd, 2024, marks the annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), a day set aside by the United Nations in 1992 to recognize the contributions of people with disabilities and promote their full inclusion in society. This day is meaningful to me because it reminds us not just to reflect on the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, but to actively commit to removing barriers and unlocking potential. Here are some ways you can help: ✅ Speak up when you see inaccessibility. For example, if you see a blocked ramp or a broken elevator, report it or remove the barrier. ✅ Call out ableism, whether it’s in conversations, workplaces, or online. ✅ Advocate for inclusive policies at work, school, and in your community. ✅ Don’t make assumptions - listen to disabled people about their needs and experiences. ✅ Educate yourself and others about accessibility and the disabled community.

Transportation needs to be accessible to persons with disabilities, but many still encounter barriers. In our 2023 report, Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities, we found that the Canadian Transportation Agency had insufficient tools and enforcement staff to address all the accessibility barriers found. This initiative, aimed at transitioning people with intellectual disabilities from institutions to community living, underscores the significance of self-determination and inclusivity. By advocating for person-centered planning and the right to live in the community, this movement has made considerable strides in transforming how society supports individuals with intellectual disabilities, promoting their full participation and inclusion in community life. • To engage further, consider exploring resources on deinstitutionalization, watching documentaries on the subject, or participating in conversations about community living for people with intellectual disabilities to foster greater awareness and support for inclusivity (Inclusion Canada).
