Semperis’ Sean Deuby spoke with Jessica Lyons about the latest #ransomware attacks on schools in the U.S. and UK. Ransomware gangs are ruthless and are driven by money, and the more they make, the better they must feel. So, they prey on organizations of all sizes. Today, there’s no silver bullet that will solve the #cybersecurity challenges facing most schools. They can, however, improve their defenses by working with their security contractors to identify the critical services such as #ActiveDirectory that are “single points of failure.” If critical services go down, school stops, and the school buses don’t roll. Have a plan for “what to do if.” This doesn’t have to be perfect but think now about what to do if email goes away or a teacher portal is locked.  More from The Register: https://lnkd.in/g-tSaerf #K12 #SLED

Summer is officially over, and pupils are back to school. As we have seen in the news over the last year, there is a continuing surge in cyber-attacks targeting UK schools, both in frequency and complexity. In 2023, 347 cyber incidents were reported in the education and childcare sector - an increase of 55% on 2022 (BBC report). That’s why it is important for educational institutions, parents and students to take cybersecurity seriously and learn how to protect themselves against a cyberattack. Highline Public Schools in Washington canceled classes for 17,000 students due to unauthorized network activity. Charles Darwin School in the UK also fell victim, affecting 1,320 students and staff. Both incidents highlight the vulnerability of educational institutions to cyber threats. School closed for some pupils so staff can "prepare lessons while they did not have access to their resources on the system". According to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office, in 2023 the education sector accounted for 11% of all cyber incidents reported, a big increase on 2022. On a positive note, 52% of UK schools have implemented a cybersecurity strategy, which is a considerably higher percentage than that of UK SMBs. This achievement is particularly commendable given the challenges schools face with budgets, resources, and skills. Shocking new research has found 73% of the UK Education sector was hit by Cyber attacks in the past 5 years (ESET 2025). This aligns with the UK government's Cyber Security Breaches survey from 2024, which found that 71% of secondary schools, 86% of further education colleges and 97% of higher education institutions experienced a cyber attack in the past 12 months. The new ESET research also found one-third of education institutions surveyed still lack fundamental protections, such as antivirus software (33%) and strong password policies (35%). In addition 7% of education institutions operate without an annual cyber security budget at all. “Education organisations are sitting on a ticking time bomb. While it’s clear that the sector recognises the critical importance of cyber security, there is a huge disconnect between budget allocation, lack of insurance and its misconceptions, and inadequate measures, which is leaving institutions highly vulnerable. A comprehensive strategy... is essential to protect against potentially devastating financial and operational impacts,” said Jake Moore, Global Cyber Security Advisor at ESET. Highline Public Schools in the Seattle area, serving over 17,000 students, has been closed for a second consecutive day due to a cyberattack that caused network outages. ⚡ The school district, based in Burien, Washington, announced that all activities, including sports and meetings, were canceled on Monday and will remain suspended as they continue to investigate the unauthorized activity. Critical systems are still offline, and while there's no confirmation of a ransomware attack, the district is working with federal and state agencies, as well as cybersecurity experts.
