Government data suggests most schools and colleges have identified a cyber-security breach in the past year. BBC News reported that during a ransomware attack, hackers block access to a school's computer records, including sensitive personal data, and demand money while threatening to publish them online. Often the attacks are committed by organized criminal gangs based in foreign countries. One such attack, identified by the BBC in the south-west of England at the start of last year, saw hackers steal and publish several highly confidential documents, including information about children with special educational needs, child passport scans and staff contract details. Semperis’ Sean Deuby spoke with Jessica Lyons about the latest #ransomware attacks on schools in the U.S. and UK. Ransomware gangs are ruthless and are driven by money, and the more they make, the better they must feel. So, they prey on organizations of all sizes. Today, there’s no silver bullet that will solve the #cybersecurity challenges facing most schools. They can, however, improve their defenses by working with their security contractors to identify the critical services such as #ActiveDirectory that are “single points of failure.” If critical services go down, school stops, and the school buses don’t roll. Have a plan for “what to do if.” This doesn’t have to be perfect but think now about what to do if email goes away or a teacher portal is locked. Summer is officially over, and pupils are back to school. As we have seen in the news over the last year, there is a continuing surge in cyber-attacks targeting UK schools, both in frequency and complexity. In 2023, 347 cyber incidents were reported in the education and childcare sector - an increase of 55% on 2022 (BBC report). That’s why it is important for educational institutions, parents and students to take cybersecurity seriously and learn how to protect themselves against a cyberattack. And, many attacks are preventable. PCA can help understand the threats schools face, whilst giving them the chance to take action and minimise the damage an attack could cause. School closed for some pupils so staff can "prepare lessons while they did not have access to their resources on the system". According to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office, in 2023 the education sector accounted for 11% of all cyber incidents reported, a big increase on 2022. On a positive note, 52% of UK schools have implemented a cybersecurity strategy, which is a considerably higher percentage than that of UK SMBs. This achievement is particularly commendable given the challenges schools face with budgets, resources, and skills. A long way to go. #protectyourprivacy #education #cybersecurity https://lnkd.in/e8D65v7E

Webinar Invite: "Schools Under Attack: Why Education is a (Cyber) Target" Thursday 20th June @ 10am There is no doubt that the UK education sector is one of the most attractive, for organised cyber criminals. A host of schools, Muilti Academy Trusts (MAT) and colleges have suffered data breaches in the past 2 years - usually resulting from ransomware attacks. While it is fair to say that investment and efforts in and around improved technical (IT) controls have improved - there might still be some reluctance to acknowledge the sheer scale of the threat, and the likelihood that your school will be next. In this webinar our expert panel will explore the reasons why education is a high target and consider key variables that might just make all the difference when (not if) the worst happens. Ransomware attack forces high school in London to close and send students home. Key takeaways: 1. This high-profile ransomware attack closed a large London high school, affecting 1,300 students and disrupting the new academic year. It illustrates the vulnerability of educational institutions and their critical data, even those with advanced security measures in place. 2. The rate of cyber attacks on educational institutions in the UK is accelerating, with 2023 recording the highest number of ransomware incidents to date. This trend has continued into 2024, intensifying concerns over student data safety and leaving schools grappling to balance rapid recovery with lengthy precautionary measures. 3. Despite some successes by law enforcement against ransomware groups, attackers continue to target education institutions globally. This puts immense pressure on cybersecurity authorities like the UK's NCSC to recall their assurances of schools being "better prepared" and reevaluate measures for effective, resilient cyber defense.
