Ensuring proper data governance and security relies on the capabilities offered by the software and platforms constituting your data infrastructure. Without these capabilities, keeping track of your data can be a struggle, as will preventing data from being compromised and safely making data accessible to stakeholders. Business process innovations or organizational changes alone cannot provide these capabilities, especially given the sheer scale of modern data flows. Without data governance and security, brand risks, legal troubles, customer endangerment and compromised intellectual property are all possible concerns. What do you think? 🌟 Uncovering the Hidden Costs of Dark Data with Afkar Collective 🌟 🔍 Dark Data, the untapped and unanalyzed information within organizations, represents a significant hidden economic burden. Studies show that dark data can constitute 30% to 50% of a company's total data volume, leading to substantial direct and indirect costs. At Afkar Collective, our core mission goes beyond just data. We are dedicated to knowledge curation through epistemological analysis. While dark data is just one dimension of the challenges we address, understanding its impact highlights the importance of effective knowledge management: Direct Costs: 💾 Storage: Storing dark data requires significant hardware and maintenance, driving up costs. 🔐 Security: Protecting this data from cyber threats demands additional security resources. 📋 Compliance: Adhering to regulations like GDPR and CCPA adds to the administrative and financial burden. Indirect Costs: 💡 Missed Opportunities: Unanalyzed data may contain insights that could spur innovation and drive new revenue streams. 🔄 Inefficient Operations: Duplicate efforts and manual processes hinder operational efficiency. ⚖️ Compliance Risks: Mishandling dark data can lead to heavy fines and reputational damage. Overall Economic Impact: 📉 Reduced Profitability: The combined costs and missed opportunities of dark data can negatively affect profitability. 🏅 Competitive Disadvantage: Companies that fail to harness their data lose out to competitors who do. Addressing the Dark Data Challenge: 🏷️ Identify and classify dark data: Understand what data exists, where it's stored, and its business value. 📈 Develop a robust data governance strategy: Define data lifecycles, including handling and disposal. 🛠️ Invest in analytics tools: Tools that analyze dark data can unlock valuable insights. 🎓 Upskill employees: Equip teams with skills in data management and analysis to maximize data utility. 🔗 A Few Pertinent Statistics: A study by IDC found dark data costs large enterprises an average of $3.1 million per year. Veritas estimates global dark data costs could reach $7.89 trillion by 2025. IBM suggests organizations could save $483 million annually by managing dark data effectively. 💡 At Afkar Collective, we don't just stop at identifying problems; we specialize in providing actionable epistemological frameworks that streamline decision-making and elevate strategic thinking. By curating knowledge through rigorous analysis, we ensure that every piece of information is leveraged to its fullest potential. Partner with Afkar Collective to transform hidden costs into powerful insights and strategic advantages. 🚀 Exciting news from the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA)! They are in the final stages of drafting an updated data strategy that aims to revolutionize their data management and utilization. 💡 DISA's upcoming roadmap will build upon their existing data strategy and take a multi-prong approach to data management, data governance, and program requirements. They are also integrating emerging technologies like automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and data reporting into their strategy. This will enable them to harness the power of data and leverage AI and automation to make rapid, data-driven decisions on the battlefield. 🎯 Lt. Gen Paul Stanton, DISA's newest director, emphasized the urgency to publish the strategy and solve problems. He understands the importance of delivering the right data to the right people at the right time. 📈 DISA's strategy is not yet ready for public release, but the anticipation is building. We can expect to see the updated data strategy in the coming months, covering fiscal years 2025 through 2027. This strategy will align with the Department of Defense's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office's 2023 Data, Analytics, and Artificial Intelligence Adoption Strategy. DISA will collaborate with partners like U.S. Cyber Command and JFHQ-DoDIN to deliver critical and actionable data to the warfighter. 💪 The challenges of data sharing and modernizing legacy code are not unique to DISA. The Defense Department and its partners are actively working on these fronts. They are leveraging AI to modernize legacy software code and pursuing AI initiatives to increase effectiveness and efficiency across their missions. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is also actively pursuing the development and deployment of AI capabilities to support their diverse missions. 🌐 Let's stay tuned for more updates on DISA's data strategy and the exciting advancements in AI and data management in the defense sector. The one constant in this new paradigm of data + AI? Data generation. As data volumes grow, managing data quality, ensuring cybersecurity and budgeting for processing has become more critical. Data governance helps organizations manage this growing data generation by creating policies, processes, and roles for handling data accurately and efficiently. We asked industry experts Alexis Bonacci, Head of Data and AI Governance at Worldpay; Garth Gehlbach, Head of Data Governance at Western Governors University; and Prameet Chadha, Assistant Director of Product Management and Operations at Northwestern Mutual, on how they use data governance to manage the increasing volume of data. How can you protect your data if you don’t know where it is, how to identify it or how to classify it? Data classification is a critical step in data protection, but can often take up valuable organizational resources. So what is data classification? Data classification is about the ability to label your data semantically, or, put another way, identifying what type of data it is. Is it sensitive? PII? Public? Highly confidential? Take a deep dive with us as we discuss the what, why and how of data classification so you can level up your data protection. https://lnkd.in/gQUszMRq

"Data leakage is a big problem for organizations. While there are many ways to protect data when it is "at rest," it is much harder to know where the data is going, who is accessing it, and how much has already been accessed. LeakSignal is an openly distributed data governance solution that classifies and protects sensitive data. Customers can block sensitive data before it is logged, observe and redact it during calls to outbound third-party application programming interfaces (APIs), and observe and set limits on internal API data access. "We are bringing a new observability metric to the world, allowing organizations to understand and govern the data flowing within their environment...The platform is designed to seamlessly integrate with an organization's existing architecture...We don't require an additional container, [virtual machine], or traffic routing...", noting that there is no disruption to existing traffic. LeakSignal offers data flow governance focusing on real-time, in-transit data classification. "Unlike traditional data loss prevention tools or perimeter-based security measures, LeakSignal operates within individual services across modern service mesh, microservices, and bespoke internal environments... The LeakSignal team recently published the company's data flow governance approach with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and is currently working with Payment Card Industry special interest groups to make data in-transit classifications simple for every regulated environment..." https://lnkd.in/gHa7WtU7 LeakSignal Wesley Jim Jill Sue Jeff Robert Brandon
