As a team-building consultant, whenever I recommend the activity "Build a Bicycle," I often hear, "Veincy, this is a senior leadership team. Do you think they'll be okay building bicycles? Isn't it a bit kiddish?" I completely understand the initial hesitation. However, the beauty of activities like this lies in their unexpected challenges. In the charity world, we like to think that everything we do is important (and is almost always urgent!). Eisenhower may be to blame for this (see image on the left) and the idea that work can be simply split into four quadrants that will help you decide what you should be working on next. The reality as we all know is that there are no clearly defined boundaries of what is important/urgent and the matrix is some sort of spiragraph drawing with blurred lines and quirky sub-boxes (see image on the right). So how do we go about deciding what we should be doing right now? That answer is simple. You IGNORE EVERYTHING and you go back to your vision for the organisation. Focus on what one thing will have the biggest impact and just do that. When that is done, you go to the next one thing that will have the biggest impact. Outsource and delegate EVERYTHING ELSE. If you dont define your priorities, other people will define them for you.
