Congrats to Adrienne Etherton and team on the Helen Putnam award. Proof that local government action combined with ratepayer programs from CCAs, RENs, and IOUs can make a difference and are critical to the 200 Climate Action Plans in California! The Energy Coalition wrote the ordinance and implemented the launch of the Brisbane Building Efficiency Programs (BBEP). Here are some unprecedented outcomes in the first 5 years of the program. -- 100% compliance!!!! In the first reporting year in 2021, roughly 90% of covered buildings submitted benchmarking reports. With increased outreach and enforcement, 100% of required buildings completed their annual reporting in 2022 and 99% in 2023 and 2024 to date. -- Brisbane Mayor Terry O’Connell added, “Buildings are a huge opportunity for climate action in local governments; in Brisbane, they represent over 40% of local greenhouse gas emissions so they are key to meeting our goal of climate neutrality in 2040.” -- Green leases lower tenant utility bills: “We needed to find a way to incentivize building owners AND their tenants. The ‘Green Lease’ allows us just that – owners cover the increased capital costs of building efficiency improvements with a higher rent payment while tenants benefit from overall reduced costs due to reductions in utility bills which outweigh the increased rent,” explained Economic Development Director Mitch Bull. -- Huge carbon reduction: The team estimated the emissions reductions expected from the program in the first five years as ~3120 MTCO2e (Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide equivalent), roughly a quarter of the emissions from the commercial building sector Ivana Dorin Jake Anderson Institute for Market Transformation Rimas Gulbinas

Do you have a no D!£%head policy? Turns out it’s good for business. Yesterday I had the privilege of listening to the Chair of the Welsh Rugby Union Richard Collier-Keywood talk eloquently about the important Welsh cultural asset he is now responsible for and the need for it to serve all stakeholders i.e. benefit society beyond the bottom line. In business it’s known as CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) which emerged as a concept in the 1960s. Back then it was seen as an altruistic means of doing more with a business than just making money, but it was assumed it would involve sacrificing profit to achieve it. The growing evidence shows this is not the case. Being environmentally responsible, inclusive and serving of all stakeholders (customers, employees, investors, the environment and wider society) builds a strong brand, customer engagement, profit and also investment opportunities. The All Blacks have an NDH (No D!£%head) policy. They clean their own dressing rooms, carry their own bags and essentially show humility, accountability and a recognition of all the stakeholders in their organisation. For me, corporate social responsibility boils down to common sense, respect and humility. It’s good to see those leading our national game going forward aspire to the same ethos. And at a time of such high attrition in business in general, would it not be best to have a smart business model that ensures that everyone in the eco system is incentivised to see the venture succeed?

I find it fascinating how 'under the radar' the @Baird Center expansion has been relative to the potential impact it has on our region. Kudos to Hunter Turpin for this great coverage and comprehensive overview of the convention center's potential impact on the region, challenges and opportunities it faces, and ultimately what it can mean for #MKE.

Anyone that knows me understands that I like to keep a low profile. Working with others and supporting what they do. I find being behind the scenes comfortable. Sometimes we need to push out of our comfort zone. The squirmy video of me is an attempt to do that, with the intent to encourage you to step out of your comfort zone too. There are so many businesses that are doing great things. Maybe like me you prefer doing than being seen. What I have learnt from the Techies Awards is celebrating what you do publicly can boost the confidence of even the most introverted amongst us. If you have a business that's doing something great, please consider entering The Business Exchange Awards. You may be surprised at how much fun it is. Writing down what you are doing and have achieved is a positive experience in and of itself. If you win an award, even better!
