Baltimore’s reputation as a natural place to celebrate has been supported by the fact that it has been home to over 100 large-scale breweries since the mid-18th century. While there are multiple craft breweries plying their craft today, none are at the scale of times past. For example, the J.F. Weissner & Sons Brewing Company housed a 10,000-bushel grain elevator in its central tower at 1700 North Gay Street, with an annual output that reached 110,000 barrels of beer by 1919, earning it the title as one of the highest-volume breweries in Maryland. The company didn’t survive Prohibition in the 20s and was sold to a succession of beverage companies until 1973, when it closed for decades, despite being list on the National Register of Historic Places. Renovations helmed by Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse, and aided by Gotham Development LLC in partnership with Baltimore City, brought the building back into service in 2009. Today it is the headquarters for social services agency Humanim. #TBT

Marking 10 years of St. James’s Gate's Brewhouse 4 This year is the 10th anniversary of Brewhouse 4 at St. James’s Gate, which was officially opened a few months before I joined the team. Our 'cathedral of brewing' was Ireland's largest construction project at the time, with over 1,000 workers on-site at its peak. Architecturally iconic and highly efficient, it achieved both LEED Platinum and BREEAM Outstanding certifications. The opening of Brewhouse 4 in 2014 was a pivotal moment for Guinness, securing brewing at St. James’s Gate for generations to come. It has enabled what we're calling a "Golden Age of Guinness", producing high-quality beers like Guinness 0.0 in a modern, high-performing brewery. Learnings from this project have also informed the construction (currently ongoing) of our new brewery in Littleconnell, supporting sustainable growth for Guinness and our wider beer portfolio into the future. And we're currently planning for Brewhouse 4's own evolution with a €100m investment to decarbonise operations and significantly improve our water use efficiency. Thanks to Aidan Crowe, Marsha Donnelly, Steve Gilsenan, Nick Quirke and Eibhlin Colgan for sharing your memories of this step in the incredible journey of brewing at St. James’s Gate. And to Josef Hrehorow and the team at Moose for pulling together the video for us. #Guinness #Sustainability #Innovation #Anniversary #IWorkForDiageo
