Seeing a lot of companies trying to hire a jack of all trades marketer. Someone who is great at organic content, twitter, community management, partnerships, events, growth, ads, etc. I think this is fine if you're looking for a head of marketing in the early stages, But not the best fit if you're trying to label the role a "Social & Community Lead". Jamming all these responsibilities is just going to take them away from what they should be doing -- building your online presence & growing your community. I'd reverse engineer based on your top priority. If that's social, narrow down to the platform. If that's partnerships, then specify. If that's community management, then label the role appropriately. Pick one lane, find someone who has done it before. Being super clear with the role & responsibilities will attract the right person too. Then you can fill in the gaps with part time support. This could be a content agency, ads contractor, growth person, partnerships support, etc. Have them manage the relationship so that they can align business priorities and drive results. This is the way I think it should be done. Generalists are great, But specialists get the job done right.

This is very true but we are missing something... Here’s what you need to understand if you are starting to build your growth team: A Head of Growth needs to be responsible for the results of all these areas, but they can’t do it all alone. So, what do you need? A Data person: This person is usually responsible for setting up analytics platforms (HockeyStack or Google Analytics) and configuring your CRM properly (HubSpot or Salesforce 🤮). They will most likely be the performance marketer. They care about numbers more than anybody else in the company. A Creative: This person is visually talented. They don’t need to be an After Effects editor, but they should be very comfortable with Canva for images and video and skilled at using AI to create imagery. As video AI improves, they also teach themselves how to use it. They will officially be your Social Media Manager but they will wear a few creative hats as content will be created by them when it's customer facing. *Bonus* A Copywriter: If you have the budget, great. Otherwise, you’ll need to lean on the Creative, with help from the Head of Growth, who should understand the big picture and ideally have some experience with copywriting. Their official title will probably be the Content marketer. *OR* You can hire an agency, which has its pros and cons. To help remove the CONS I’ve created a list of agencies tailored to various companies’ needs, and they are also more, let’s say, investment-responsible. Is social media marketing a fluffy industry? Is it less important than working in finance? When I first pivoted from consulting to marketing, I assumed I was jumping into an entirely different world. But the truth? These fields are similar. Consulting is all about solving problems. You dive deep into a client’s world, unpack challenges, and craft strategies to address them. Marketing, at its core, is solving a problem too—helping a customer see why a product or service is the answer they NEED. In both fields, the goal is to deeply understand people’s pain points and guide them toward a solution. In marketing, you’re using messaging, A/B tests, and analysis to understand what creatives resonate and push people to buy your solution over the competitors. Both fields require analytical minds, empathy, and a relentless drive for results. The tools (and the stereotypes) may differ, but the mindset and the skills required have a heap of overlap. You can't fix a fundamental problem by hiring someone. Hiring an AE doesn't guarantee you more revenue. Hiring a demand-gen marketer doesn't guarantee you more leads.
