A professional logistician who only knows about transportation is the same as having a burger sandwich without cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mayonnaise. 😂 Should we call this the Supply Chain-Logistics Evolution or Revolution 5.0❓ Most people may be familiar with the 4 or maybe even the 5 industrial revolutions. As automation and technological advancements continue to accelerate, the logistics and supply chain industry plays a pivotal role in integrating and coordinating various information control, transmission, and processing technologies. This integration enhances efficiency, security, and sustainability. 1️⃣ industrial revolution (1.0) began in the 18th century were mechanical solutions and steam power started to change the industrial production from manpower to steam engines for power. 2️⃣ industrial revolution (2.0) began in the 19th century after the discovery of a new technology of electrical energy and leading the way to mass production and assembly line. 3️⃣ industrial revolution (3.0) began mid-20th century with computer, RFID technology and information technology era setting the way to automated system, although still relying on some human actions. 4️⃣ industrial revolution (4.0) began sometime around 2011 with the introduction of internet of things (IoT), cyber physical systems and cloud technology leading the way to a digital transformation. 5️⃣ industrial revolution (5.0) is believed to have begun in the early of 2020 with the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI), mass customization and intelligent machines working alongside with humans. The industrial model is undergoing yet another transformation, with a strong focus on the quality of services and the implementation of continuous information management. This shift is tied to the demand for a customer-centric supply chain that caters to the specific needs and preferences of customers, providing them with products and services in a timely manner and at a competitive price. The advent of various technologies, such as blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), and big data, is driving a transformative wave in the supply chain. This convergence of technological advancements is fueling a new revolution that promises to reshape the way businesses operate and optimize their logistics operations. Another trend is the focus on sustainability , with an increase in environmental awareness , now days many organizations are addressing and examining sustainability as a strategic concern of great importance for long term success of companies. Businesses require sustainability because it enables them to recognize and address a variety of external concerns, including social and environmental issues. I can name one example , one of the most urgent global concerns facing this generation is climate change. This reminds me of my final year , where I had a module titled Contemporary Management Principle by Tersia Botha and Mari Vrba where they discussed how companies can incorporate sustainable practices , this included: ✔ Minimizing impacts on the environment through resource conservation and waste reduction. ✔ Adding more environmentally friendly materials to the manufacturing or production processes. ✔Making money while taking social and environmental costs into account. ✔ Green Logistics These trends has not only transformed Logistics and Supply Chain operations but also have improved customer satisfaction ,as the industry continues to evolve is crucial for companies to adopt these trends so that they remain competitive and resilient in this ever-changing environment .
