Calls are being made to end the destructive fishing practice, which is notorious for high rates of bycatch and damage to the #seabed. An analysis of satellite data by Global Fishing watch shows that despite the high number of #trawling hours in #UK waters, one-quarter of this damaging activity was caused by just 10 vessels. None of those boats were registered in the UK, with #British ships responsible for just 6% of the total number of trawler fishing hours recorded last year. As a result of this practice, habitats are effectively being bulldozed beneath the surface of the sea, with potentially irreversible effects. Nevertheless, trawling is permitted by law in almost all UK #marine protected areas [MPAs], designated in a bid to protect vulnerable species. The two most exploited sites in the country were both located off the #Cornish coast. These were the Western Channel MPA, which supports species including the small-spotted cat shark and angler fish, and the Southwest Deeps (East), home to one of Britain’s most-threatened molluscs, the fan mussel, alongsie cuckoo rays. The area also stores carbon equivalent to 1million return flights between #London and #Sydney, which is at risk of entering the atmosphere if the terrain is disturbed. ‘Our marine ‘protected’ areas are crisscrossed with the scars of this highly destructive form of fishing, which may take decades to heal. These areas are vital havens for ocean wildlife and protect us against the #climatecrisis,’ said Hugo Togholm, Executive Director at Oceana UK. ‘Everything from sharks to starfish are hoovered up by #bottomtrawling, which can destroy whole #ecosystems and empty our seas of life. This also threatens communities seeking to make a sustainable living from our seas,’ he continued. ‘The government must act now to ban this destructive practice from all our marine protected areas. Anything less is a complete betrayal of our ocean wildlife, which urgently need sanctuaries that are safe from this wholesale destruction.’

Last week, NOAA Fisheries announced that North Atlantic right whale # 5120, a 3-year-old female found dead on Martha’s Vineyard earlier this year, died from chronic entanglement in fishing gear consistent with that used for lobster fishing in Maine. North Atlantic right whales are critically endangered—each death pushes the species closer to extinction, and preventable losses such as this one are especially heartbreaking. https://lnkd.in/emPJSkdw AWI hopes that this tragic and unnecessary death will finally spur the fishing industry to adopt ropeless technology to help save the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale from extinction. Ropeless systems replace traditional vertical fishing lines with a remote-controlled cage, inflatable lift-bag, or spool of rope that is stowed on the seafloor, greatly reducing the chance of whales becoming entangled. Packing straps and discarded fishing line are our most common culprits for entanglement. The closer we get to a fishing town like Walvis Bay, the more entangled animals we find. It is a classic human-wildlife conflict, when encounters between humans and wildlife lead to negative results, and animals are usually the ones who have to pay a high price. But where else should they go? There is rubbish everywhere, and they need fish to survive. Wherever there is fish, there will be a massive fishing industry with all their rubbish and bad practices. #ocn #pollution #plastic #oceanconservationnamibia #sealrescue

"If Floridians are committed to protecting fishing as a way of life, they’ll want to take step two: amending our state constitution with a fundamental “Right to Clean and Healthy Waters.” If a right to fishing merits the protections only a constitutional amendment can provide, then even more so does a right to clean and healthy waters upon which healthy fish populations, people and economies depend. Step two, however, won’t be easy. Unlike placing the right to fish on the state ballot themselves, our legislature is forcing citizens to collect 900,000 petitions to put a right to clean and healthy waters before voters in 2026. Consequently, we need hundreds of thousands of Florida registered voters to go to https://lnkd.in/esy5neBY and print out, sign and mail their petition and to get four others to do the same. Preserving fishing as a way of life is worth this small commitment. We also need more volunteer petition gatherers because voters will sign readily if there is someone standing before them. Lastly, we need $5 million for a targeted mail campaign and advertising. With modest commitment and money, this amendment will qualify for the 2026 ballot. Without them, Floridians will be left with a right to bad fishing. " https://lnkd.in/ehCDbxpp If you're willing to help, go to https://lnkd.in/etQtqghs.

Every year, tons of marine debris, including ghost gear, pose significant threats to marine life, contributing to whale entanglement, due to traditional fishing methods. At Ashored Innovations, we're tackling this environmental challenge head-on with our innovative Rope-on-Command (ROC) fishing gear system. ROC not only enhances fishermen's efficiency but also addresses marine debris and reduces the risk of whale entanglements. This article does a great job of discussing and describing the technology we sell and service at Network Innovations Maritime to manage and monitor bycatch.
Alaska’s pollock fishery is the world's second-largest commercial fishery and one of the most selective (measured by total bycatch) and monitored fisheries in the Bering Sea. Yet too many are unfamiliar with how far we go to fish smarter and responsibly to protect the marine ecosystem. Read what a longtime Alaskan and commercial fishing vessel captain wishes more Alaskans knew about the pollock fishery. “The way our fisheries are managed today has allowed us to focus on minimizing waste while investing in bycatch avoidance technology. I’m proud to say the pollock fishery is very clean; we model how to operate responsibly.” #ResponsibleFisheryManagement https://lnkd.in/gsEh9jR7

Target: Director David Golden, New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife Goal: Protect marine life and ecosystems. The Atlantic Ocean, adjacent to New Jersey’s coastline, is threatened by unsustainable fishing practices. Overfishing, illegal fishing gear, and bycatch are depleting fish stocks and endangering marine ecosystems. The time for half-measures has passed; it’s time to decisive action now. The Atlantic waters are not just a source of livelihood for countless fishermen but also a critical marine habitat. The ocean’s health directly impacts New Jersey’s coastal communities, tourism, and local economies.
