This is the first case in Canada, a similar suit was filed in the US last year. The boundaries of what ChatGPT can use for its learning/training system is bound to bump into copyright and intellectual property rights. Interesting to see how the courts handle this new case. #ChatGPT #canada #lawsuit #rights #AI

The OpenAI-Johansson dispute highlights a critical gap in our legal framework: the inadequacy of copyright law in addressing AI-generated content. Historically, the ambiguities within copyright law have often benefited corporations with the resources to navigate it while leaving individual creators and many and SMB's vulnerable. As AI blurs the lines between ownership and authorship, these same ambiguities now pose challenges to those who once exploited them. This case underscores the urgent need for legal reform to keep pace with technological advancements. Without clear guidelines, AI threatens to further tip the scales against individual creators who cannot afford costly litigation. The future of AI hinges on establishing robust legal protections that safeguard the rights of all creators, regardless of their resources, striking a balance between innovation and responsibility, and ensuring that technology serves society equitably and ethically. Frye highlights the uncertainty in this area: “But copyright law would be unlikely to play a role for Johansson, as one cannot copyright a voice. It would be right of publicity.” Frye is also uncertain how any case might play out, noting that right of publicity is a fairly “esoteric” area of law. There are no federal right-of-publicity laws in the United States, only a patchwork of state statutes. “It’s a mess,” he says. #AIGeneratedContent #CopyrightLaw #LegalReform #DigitalRights #Innovation #AIethics #IntellectualProperty #RightOfPublicity #TechLaw #CreativeRights #FutureOfAI #LegalFramework #EthicalAI #DigitalCreativity https://lnkd.in/gnWmSuiC

Lol...the push to digitize everything. To later feed AI and put everyone out of work after training the models. AI does make things up sometimes I have noticed but I do to, I have noticed. 2025 = trending search terms = AI Copyright Lawsuit. I guess it's fine if they push out UBI but they are thinning the heard for many decades now instead and just freaking everyone out. Copyright could have been adapted to a new model because ultimately everything just became owned by non-living entities called the company which wasn't the sole purpose. A flat wage to get rid of the crooks in the middle. The companies really just serve as a new kind of crook in this way, just dressed up real nice in legal speak. Instead of worker rights you have worker intimidation, sign away your rights for a job, don't piss off the manager, go along with corruption to get along, illicit trade pass thru is fine...no adults in the modern world. https://lnkd.in/eSpNQupY
