🌐 Unlocking China-Italy Relations: Insights from Michele Geraci 🇨🇳🇮🇹 In a recent interview, Michele Geraci, a professor at NYU Shanghai and a key figure in Italy's entry into the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), provided valuable insights into China-Italy relations and the broader implications for international partnerships. Here are some key takeaways: 🔹 Strategic Engagement for Economic Growth: Michele Geraci emphasized how Italy's proactive stance in joining the BRI in 2018 was a strategic move to enhance its economic ties and competitiveness. This initiative aimed to place Italian companies on par with their European counterparts by engaging in global infrastructure projects. 🔹 Detailed Negotiations for Mutual Benefit: The negotiations for Italy's involvement in the BRI were meticulous. A seven-page MoU was crafted to align with European values such as reciprocity and environmental standards. This framework set a precedent for other countries, including Switzerland and Luxembourg, to join the BRI. 🔹 Complexities of Global Politics: The decision to exit the BRI was described as a significant misstep by Michele Geraci highlighted the lack of a coherent rationale from the Italian government and the broader implications for Italy-China relations. This decision was not well-received by the Chinese counterparts, who valued the strategic partnership. 🔹 Navigating Global Perceptions: Michele Geraci discussed the challenges of being perceived as "pro-China" due to his extensive knowledge and positive analysis of China's economic strategies. He stressed the importance of separating factual analysis from political bias to foster informed discussions and better policies. 🙏 A Big Thank You to Michele Geraci for sharing his insights and as always fantastic interviews by Frank Tsai from China Crossroads 🙏 For those interested in understanding the intricacies of international relations and economic diplomacy, this conversation is a must-watch! 📺 #InternationalRelations #ChinaItaly #BeltAndRoad #EconomicGrowth #GlobalPolitics #LinkedInLearning #WatchNow NYU Shanghai Finance Society NYU Shanghai Center for Career Development Paolo Marco Giacomo Aurora Lorenzo Tanya Peter Mauro Marco Jessie Cooper Caterina Wen Luca Andrea Gianluca Dandan Matteo Chen卫 Andrea Aloisio Lilly Alessandro Silvia Federica Sofia Canali Linda Calabrese Melanie Ullrich Arvea Marieni zhou menghan 📈🌍📹

Crossing boundaries, connecting an ocean: New Zealand, Latin America and the Blue Pacific. Our Director, Dr Matthew O'Meagher, Deputy Director Craig Nicholson and MartinJenkins Principal Consultant John Capper met today for a fascinating dialogue with the Ambassador of Cuba, H.E. Mr Luís Ernesto Morejón Rodríguez, about our Latin America Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence research piece. The research focuses on these key themes: 1. The extent of interests shared by New Zealand, Latin America and Pacific nations and peoples. 2. Uncover new opportunities for beneficial partnerships across the Pacific 3. Support the objectives of the Pacific Islands Forum 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. 4. Weave Latin American nations into wider Pacific regional discourses; and 5. Help align New Zealand policy approaches to the South Pacific and Latin America in original, transformative and cost-effective ways. Gracias Embajador Morejón for kindly hosting us today & sharing important Cuban perspectives on our regions. This included, for example, the important contributions of Cuba & Cuban doctors globally, including in Pacific nations, and the support of New Zealand to support the English language training of such doctors. We also discussed opportunities for future collaboration and potential barriers. Finally, it‘s important to note 2024 is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations relations between Cuba and New Zealand. ¡Viva Cuba! ¡Viva Nueva Zelandia! ¡Viva el Océano Pacífico!
