Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s office unveiled a “reinvigorated” national counterterrorism policy. This strategy pledges a mix of “kinetic efforts,” new legislation to support terrorism prosecutions, and measures to combat violent extremism. On Tuesday, Sharif clarified that the plan, still in its early stages, will prioritize stepping up current intelligence-based operations over initiating military incursions. This significant move aims to address the rising threat of terrorism in #Pakistan, where assaults increased by two-thirds between 2022 and 2023. Pakistan has engaged in cross-border operations in #Afghanistan, pressured the #AfghanTaliban to curb anti-Pakistan militant activities, and held discussions with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the country’s biggest threat. The resurgence of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) poses a significant threat to Pakistan’s internal stability and regional security, escalating since the return of the Afghan Taliban to power in 2021. Strengthened by alliances with other groups, leadership changes, and state sponsorship, TTP has expanded its operations, challenging counter-terrorism efforts. Despite Pakistan’s attempts at negotiation and recent military operations, the TTP's growing influence remains a pressing concern for South Asia’s stability. I am excited to share my latest article, "Pakistan's Counterterrorism Strategy: Beyond Azm-e-Istehkam," for the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), a leading defense and security think tank based in the UK. I argued that Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, like its predecessors, is unlikely to bring lasting peace unless Pakistan shifts to a more holistic and integrated strategy. The military alone cannot win this war; true victory requires the backing of socioeconomic development, robust legal frameworks, political unity, and unwavering public support. I delved into how, with the launch of this latest military counterterrorism operation, the country can ensure that it does not repeat past mistakes. It's time for a fresh perspective and a new approach. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/d5jMahVe. #AzmeIstehkam #Counterterrorism #Pakistan #SecurityStudies #PolicyAnalysis

Following the latest terrorist attack in Baloachistan, the military and civil society leadership must work together to implement a counterterrorism strategy in order to defuse the long-standing unrest in the province, It's almost 4th term of Government under the umbrella of PmlN. The BLA has come dangerously close to attacking many regions of the province; it was most likely just a security and intelligence lapse that allowed the terrorists to target both security and civilian agencies. Prior to adopting a mitarised security approach, Balochistan's pressing concerns require a more comprehensive answer. For that People representatives elected by the people of Baluchistan may galvanize the masses against the menace of terrorism when their rights, opportunities, and concerns are honored. Forces can only fight terrorism as a means of internal or external opposition with the moral support of the country's inhabitants.
