Culture shock is an experience a person may have when one moves to a cultural environment which is different from one's own; it is also the personal disorientation a person may feel when experiencing an unfamiliar way of life due to immigration or a visit to a new country, a move between social environments, or simply transition to another type of life. One of the most common causes of culture shock involves individuals in a foreign environment. Culture shock can be described as consisting of at least one of four distinct phases: honeymoon, negotiation, adjustment, and adaptation.

Systemic oppression + social conditioning + external expectations = a complete disconnection from self. This separation from self has MASSIVE impacts on every aspect of our lives because it leads to: 1️⃣ The inability to understand our body’s signals ⇒ leading to chronic exhaustion, burnout, and eventually illness 2️⃣ Lack of (or absent) understanding of self ⇒ leading to values misalignment ⇒ which leads to unfulfillment 3️⃣ Lack of worthiness (this one is MASSIVE) ⇒ leading to self-sabotage, lack of self-trust, and an absent connection with our intuition 4️⃣ Confusion about who we are and what we want from life To make matters worse, we then lead our teams and organizations from this disconnected and misguided place, making us the ones who uphold systemic oppression, most of the time in ways we don’t even recognize. There’s only one way to solve this problem. Turn your lens inwards. Reconnect with yourself. That’s how you take your power back. * * * * * 👋🏽 I’m Miriam, a Palestinian Executive Leader turned Coach, Speaker + Retreat Host. 🍉 I help folks with intersecting identities design a values-aligned life and career and support organizations in building human-centered cultures. 💡 Be sure to follow along for more!

🌟 This powerful reminder urges us to reassess where we're investing our emotional energies. It's a call to honor ourselves and the value we bring to our relationships. The study interviewed 20 men and women about adjustment problems in the new country. They all mentioned feeling lonely, disconnected and miserable. The feeling of loss of one’s culture and language has a big impact on expats, as in this study. Reference (Hack-Polay, D., & Mahmoud, A. B. (2021). Big cities are fast-paced cities. People look for results. Get deals done. Fast. GenieFriends is born out of our somewhat unintuitive belief: that you can most count on people you resonate with, or what we call, "friends". How do we facilitate friendships? We found a key: warm introductions – introductions through people who vouch not just for your interests, but for who you are. This shapes our dinner experience. Our hosts introduce you to the community as their friends. We carefully craft seating plans to place you with people we know are good company. Our experience designs makes striking up that first conversation a little easier. And our tech capabilities amplify, not replace, our human touch. As we grow, our hope is we will have ever expanding ability to connect you with your future friends. Not just more encounters, but the more compatible ones. Thank you Hoi Ying Lo and Daniel Suen who frankly told our story better than we do 👇🏻
Had a great time at my first-ever dinner with GenieFriends! Making friends as an adult has proven to be difficult, especially in a fast-paced city like Hong Kong where everyone seems to be rushing somewhere. How can we carve out space for genuine interactions and open conversations about ourselves? How do we get over the fatigue of repeating our life story to everyone we meet for the first time, and connect on a deeper level? Secret gatherings among strangers have become more popular around the world and in Hong Kong amid growing social media fatigue and a craving for in-person interactions after the Covid-19 pandemic. Turns out, it was easier than I thought it would be. Granted it took me to muster some courage before showing up to a room full of strangers, but the conversations flowed so naturally my initial apprehensions felt unfounded. When was the last time you checked in on someone? Just to see how they are. Who comes to mind as you read my question? Also, when was the last time you checked in on yourself? I find myself busy serving others both professionally and personally that I run the risk of running on empty. As an introvert, I understand the comfort of solitude, yet also recognize the profound impact of genuine connections. Introverts cherish meaningful interactions over small talk, and if we don't find the right people to connect with, we may end up feeling isolated and lonely. Checking in with our loved ones and colleagues is more than a courtesy—it's a lifeline. In my coaching practice, I emphasize the power of authentic conversations. Asking "How have you been?" and listening intently can bridge the gaps that urban living creates. Read and watch this article from CNA - "Are you lonely in Singapore?". https://lnkd.in/gYtkUXDZ I love the fact that even Elmo is out there checking in on us! Have a great weekend checking in on those you care about and also on yourself. #MentalHealth #CommunityCare #LonelinessAwareness #IntrovertLife #ConnectionMatters #whoischeckingin

Today's post from The Apostrophe (my lit mag) touches on the theme of emigration, something that many businesses in Hong Kong are grappling with, but from the viewpoint of a child ... and with a deeper tragedy. Time to pause your working day for a few minutes and read this chapter. https://lnkd.in/gaXmK4G2

I found this article on managing stress at work quite insightful. Recognizing your stress signals and reframing stress as a sign of importance rather than a threat can transform how we handle challenging situations. Techniques like deep breathing and positive self-talk are practical and can be applied instantly to regain control. Having a trusted colleague to talk to and creating a prioritized task list are excellent ways to manage overwhelming workloads. These immediate strategies not only help mitigate stress but also enhance productivity. It is important to integrate these practices into our daily routines to foster a more supportive and effective work environment.
When stress that comes from life and work intertwine, it can compound and make everything harder. Handling the feelings in the moment is the first step.
