“Running has led me to show my community that you can achieve your dreams.”
Ugandan distance runner and ASICS athlete Joy Cheptoyek knows all about the transformational power of sport. She told us about being a role model at home, and how she wants children in Uganda to grow up with A Sound Mind in a Sound Body.
Through our partnership with nonprofit Right To Play, ASICS contributes to educating and empowering children in Africa to overcome the effects of poverty, conflict and disease by using the power of sports.

#InternationalDayoftheAfricanChild: A Call from Chess in Slums Africa
Today, as we celebrate International Day of the African Child, we reflect on the countless stories of triumph and transformation that we have witnessed through our champions.
For every story we rewrite, there are millions of untold stories of children who do not yet know the possibilities that lie ahead.
As we commemorate this day, let’s take a moment to remember those children and ask ourselves, “How can I make a change in my capacity?”
You don’t have to wait until you have it all to make a difference. A first step can be as simple as volunteering your time, advocating for a cause you believe in within your network, or making a donation.
A first step could be as powerful as believing in the inherent potential of every child, regardless of their current status, to become a champion.
Just like a pawn in the game of chess can become a queen, every child has the potential to rise to greatness.
Today, we pose a question to you: How do you intend to invest in humanity?
Let’s all take that first step, whatever it may be, and commit to seeing and nurturing the potential in every child. Every action, no matter how small, can contribute to a brighter future for the children of Africa.
Together, we can make a lasting impact. Every child counts.

Our Executive Director of Canada SCORES Toronto Nick Taylor (He/Him) shares his thoughts on this recent interview led by Steve Paikin on his show The Agenda.
Initially Nick was drawn in due to the topic, and ultimately kept watching due to the high value content being discussed by three folks in the business, sport and cause communities that Nick has met and respects for their contributions - Marco Di Buono , Bruce Kidd and Dan Cardoza.
As a nonprofit organization in the youth development space, Canada SCORES Toronto launched in the GTA in 2024, but has 30 years of history behind it across North America through America SCORES and 10 years under the Canada SCORES banner in Vancouver. The organization was initially founded througha 1994 FIFA World Cup Legacy Program Fund.
Canada SCORES is one of the emerging community programs that Marco mentions towards the end of the panel discussion that delivers programs for FREE. In fact, we deliver our FREE after school programs in partnership with local schools, where according to Bruce, his friends at the Toronto District School Board TDSB say they are no longer able to deliver the comprehensive curriculum for phyisical activity within their schools.
Given that current statistics sugest that 58% of parents say financial constraints are limiting their ability to keep kids in activities, programs such as Canada SCORES can fill a vital gap in our schools and communities to ensure an includive, safe, fun and "whole child" focus curriculum and programs are available to support the well being and social emotional development of children and youth.
We should pay attention to Bruce's words when he sugests Gordie Howe would never make the NHL today as he would not fit into the "class" system that exists around the current professionalized youth sport sector. How many children may never realize their dreams of playing and competing in sport because of financial barriers to entry?
We should also note what Marco shared when he said that an investment of only $1.00 can result in $13.00 of savings in the form of reduced health care costs to the system and a recution in youth justice expenses. Can you think of a better way to invest a dollar?
If you can, consider making a gift to Canada SCORES. You can support the impact of our work that has been building for 10 years in Vancouver, and is about to launch this Fall in the Greater Toronto Area.

At Canada SCORES, we believe we can be part of the solution to the problems called out by these three sector leaders. We welcome interested folks to reach out to our Execeutive team leaders in Toronto and Vancouver with any questions you may have about how you can make an impact in the lives of vulnerable children and youth.

Last night, Marco Di Buono (President, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities) joined The Agenda with Steve Paikin on TVO to discuss how affordability barriers are impacting kids' access to sport.
Joined by Dan Cardoza (YMCA of Greater Toronto) and celebrated Olympian & academic Bruce Kidd, the panel discussed the importance of building an inclusive, accessible and safe environment for all kids and the opportunities available to make lasting and meaningful change across Canada.

It's estimated that across Africa, the number of children living on the streets is staggering: Uganda has around 10,000 street children, Ghana between 40,000 and 90,000, Kenya approximately 300,000, Sudan about 600,000, and Nigeria alone close to 2 million.
These children face unimaginable hardships daily, struggling to survive without the support, structure, and opportunities many of us take for granted.
I know their pain all too well, because I used to be one of them. I once lived on the streets before I found my path. But through resilience, guidance, and opportunity, I was able to turn my life around.
Today, I’ve become a role model in my community, dedicating my life to helping more young individuals get off the streets and onto a better path.
Through Gloves for Africa, a foundation I work with founded by Chuks Uwaechia, we have supported over 8,000 street children, with more than 2,000 now permanently off the streets. Using boxing as our primary tool, we provide these youth with discipline, motivation, and a sense of purpose.
Boxing teaches them resilience and helps them channel their energy into something positive, making them champions not just in the ring but also making them role models in their communities.
Many of these children have returned to school, while others have gained valuable skills through our programs. We've empowered them with the tools they need to succeed. Some have chosen to pursue careers in boxing, and we’ve facilitated their entry into boxing academies.
I'm proud to say that several of them recently represented their states at the 8th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria.
Yet, the need is still overwhelming. There are countless more children across Africa who need our help, guidance, and support.
That's why we’ve recently launched the #1MillionGlovesCampaign—an ambitious initiative to raise 1 Million Gloves and reach out to 1 Million young individuals across Africa.
We don't just give them gloves—we give them hope, structure, discipline, and the tools to rewrite their stories.
We can’t do this alone. We need more corporate partners and individuals to join us in this mission to transform lives. Together, we can create lasting change and help these young individuals find their own paths to success.
The question is: What are you doing to make a difference?
You can make a difference today by supporting and partnering with us .

Empowering dreams through Sports Advocacy and provision of training kits. We prevent the use of abusive substances amongst young athletes by early counseling in conjunction with sporting activities.
Sports have long been a beacon of hope for individuals from less privileged backgrounds, offering a pathway out of poverty and into a brighter future. Through sports, young people can develop valuable skills like discipline, hard work, communication skills and teamwork, which can translate into success in all areas of life. Moreover, sports can provide a sense of belonging and identity, helping to boost self-esteem and confidence. By supporting and investing in sports programs such as scouting, tournaments for underprivileged youths, we can help level the playing field and empower them to achieve their full potential. By doing so, we can help break the cycle of poverty, take crime out of many and unlock a brighter future for generations to come. why are we preaching this? Many of this less privileged youths lack basic gears and kits to achieve this. #pairstoglory is tailored in a small way to reach out to as much as resources can permit. why not be part of this and contributing towards the well-being, success of this youths.

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and the MCC Foundation are proud to announce the establishment of the Global Refugee Cricket Fund, an ambitious initiative to expand the work being undertaken by the Foundation to support refugees worldwide. The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has donated £100,000 to help immediately kickstart projects that use cricket to transform lives of refugees facing hardship and exclusion.
Building on the Foundation’s long-standing commitment to using cricket as a tool for unity, empowerment, and opportunity, this fund will enhance ongoing efforts to assist displaced communities, including Afghan refugees, and introduce new avenues of support across the globe.
The campaign’s initial focus will be to raise funds for Pitch Our Future, an Australian-led programme that empowers and supports players from the former Afghanistan Women’s Cricket Team.
Objectives of the Global Refugee Cricket Fund:
1. Empower Refugee Communities through Cricket: Harnessing cricket as a means of inclusion and personal development.
2. Support Women in Cricket Worldwide: Enabling access to the sport for women who face significant barriers.
3. Promote Global Awareness and Advocacy: Amplifying voices to champion equality and the importance of sports in rebuilding lives.

Today, October 19, 2024, Saturday, I had the opportunity to volunteer as a referee for Freedom Football KL, a grassroots initiative that brings people together to enjoy the beautiful game while supporting a more significant cause—raising funds for humanitarian efforts in Palestine. It was a fulfilling experience, not just because I got to help others have a joyful time on the field but also because it reinforced the power of community through sports.
A special thanks to the organizers of Freedom Football KL for forwarding such a meaningful cause through the beautiful game. Their dedication to using football as a platform for social good is inspiring, and it reminds us how sports can truly unite people for a higher purpose.
During the event, I spoke with a friend who reminded me of the importance of cultivating the "weekend warrior" spirit—using recreational sports as a way to reconnect with ourselves, our neighbours, and causes more significant than us. It's about more than just playing the game; it's about making a positive impact.
I encourage everyone, whether you're a football lover, a weekend warrior, or someone looking to give back, to get involved in initiatives like Freedom Football KL or any cause that resonates with you. These opportunities allow us to pay it forward, building stronger communities and contributing to meaningful humanitarian efforts.
Let's make our weekends count for something bigger. Everyone's passion can fuel change; together, we can create a lasting impact.

⛔1956 Olympics came as a huge embarrassment for the Aussies and the result was governments started putting money into sports and set up Australian institute of sports.
🎯It is the combination for all of the above. If you incentivize, show interest, and put money in each sport, citizens would be more than happy to put effort and bring laurels to the nation.
