The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has celebrated a significant achievement at the CYBATHLON 2024, winning first place with their state-of-the-art 'WalkON Suit F1.' This victory marks their second triumph, having previously secured a gold medal in 2020 with the 'WalkON Suit IV.' The esteemed event, often referred to as the "Cyborg Olympics," was held in Switzerland on October 27, showcasing 71 teams from 26 different countries.
The 'WalkON Suit F1' is a groundbreaking wearable robot designed specifically for individuals with complete lower body paralysis (ASIA-A). Developed over two years, this innovative device enhances motor output and balance, allowing users to walk independently. A standout feature is its front-loading design, enabling users to wear the robot without assistance while remaining seated in their wheelchairs—an industry first.
During the competition, the KAIST team, led by Professor Gong Kyung-chul, successfully completed six challenging missions in just 6 minutes and 41 seconds, outperforming second and third-place teams from Switzerland and Thailand, who completed only two tasks each.
Key challenges included standing from cramped seating, navigating stairs without handrails, and walking freely without a cane—tasks that truly tested the capabilities of the 'WalkON Suit F1.' Team member Kim Seung-hwan, who is completely paralyzed, highlighted the vital role of teamwork in achieving this victory.
With plans to reveal more advanced features of the 'WalkON Suit F1,' KAIST continues to lead in assistive technology innovation, offering hope and independence to individuals with mobility challenges.
