Aftermovie: The Green City of the Future Symposium! 🎥 Just over a month ago, we hosted The Green City of the Future #symposium in collaboration with the Gemeente Almere and Felixx Landscape Architects & Planners. This inspiring event brought together over 100 policymakers, researchers, and urban planners to explore transformative, nature-based solutions for making cities more sustainable, resilient, and future-proof. We’re excited to share the #aftermovie, capturing the energy and key moments from the day! Key #takeaway? Cities need a fundamental #shift in urban development—nature shouldn’t be an add-on but the foundation of city planning. Through open dialogue, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing, this event emphasized that this shift is not only necessary but achievable. In the coming weeks, stay tuned for more insights on essential topics like water resilience, healthy soils, and sustainable mobility. Let’s keep the momentum going to create greener, more resilient cities! More information: https://lnkd.in/epsFE-zW

A New Generation of Urban Agendas: 3 Keys for Global Transformation 1. Urban to Territorial Perspective: City planning must consider regional impacts to promote sustainable urban-rural interactions, as exemplified by Catalonia's 2050 strategy. 2. Analog to Digital Management: To prevent digital divides, NUAs focus on digital literacy and infrastructure, boosting accessibility, competitiveness, and equity for all. 3. Siloed to Multilevel Governance: Breaking down administrative silos, NUAs encourage coordinated governance to address challenges like climate change and economic inequality. New Urban Agendas aim to drive global change through sustainable planning, collaboration, and digital integration. Nature-based solutions (NBS) in #urbanplanning. Check out our latest open-access publications on nature-based solutions with case-studies from Malta’s Grand Harbour area. Identifying suitable policy instruments to promote nature-based solutions NbS in urban plans: https://lnkd.in/ddhFjB6R. This study also evaluates policies within the North Harbour and Grand Harbour Local Plans that promote NBS, identifying the lack of incentives for NBS uptake and instruments for building scale implementation of NBS. Davide Geneletti Davide Longato #ChiaraCortinovis #ReNatureH2020 Exploring the potential for nature-based solutions to cool the streetscapes of a densely urbanised #Mediterranean city: https://lnkd.in/d5RGrETJ. This study assesses the cooling capacity of vegetation within Cottonera, identifies plants used by residents, and evaluates the willingness of residents to implement projects that improve pedestrian thermal comfort. Based on the outcomes of this study, 3 NBS types are proposed that can be co-implemented by and with communities. What if rooftops could make cities greener and more resilient? 👇 Well, green roofs are doing just that—transforming urban landscapes by integrating nature into our built environment. They enhance energy efficiency, manage stormwater, and promote biodiversity, creating more sustainable and resilient urban spaces. Green roofs also bring economic benefits. They provide natural insulation, reduce energy costs, and extend the lifespan of roofing materials by shielding them from the elements. Investing in green roofs is a step toward a more sustainable and cost-effective future. 🌿 Green up the roofs, the cities, the world! 💚🌍 __ Athens College HAEF, Greece Supply & technical support provided by Prasini Stegi Green Roof Systems __ #greenroofs #sustainability #urbanarchitecture #landscape #rooftops #benefits

💦 “How ‘sponge city’ Rotterdam is adapting to climate change.” As a result of our press trip Climate Adaptive Urbanism, Architects’ Journal published an extensive article. 🌳 Featuring numerous projects by De Urbanisten and the City Projects, the article gives an insightful overview of all the measures Rotterdam is taking to balance development with increased biodiversity. ✍️ As journalist Rob Wilson concludes: “For all the inherent tensions, the sheer ambition of Rotterdam’s Seven City Projects and the linking of development and environmental agendas is impressive, if not perfect. It shows what’s possible if the political will is there.” Read the article: https://bit.ly/3UkGGiW #rotterdam #resilience #newdutch #climateadaptation #urbandevelopment #biodiversity #publicspace

Breaking Barriers to Accelerate Nature-Inclusive Urban Development: Best Practices 🌱 🌆 🌲📈🌳 💚 This StoryMap is intended as an inspirational guide to accelerate nature-inclusive urban development. This approach combines biodiversity goals with urban development, resulting in nature-based solutions such as blue/green roofs, smart water management and vertical ecosystems, to create climate-adaptive and nature-inclusive cities. Seven barriers have been identified limiting the acceleration of the nature-based approach, including aspects, such as lack of financing, competition for urban space, limited collaboration and insufficient knowledge. To make a change, we need to think of possibilities, instead of only focusing on the barriers. In this StoryMap, many inspiring practical examples are demonstrated. For example, the Trudo Vertical Forest in Eindhoven, combines social housing with a green iconic appearance. Projects such as GreenQuays in Breda show how vertical ecosystems can be integrated even in urban areas without space for natural banks.
