During September, I had the unique opportunity to interact with school students (grades 7 and 8) and share with them my passion for healthy indoor climate. 😎 Let's start off by saying that the kids are way more understanding, appreciative, and open minded than we would like to think. Even more, they are able to utilize the bits of knowledge and ideas shared with them to come to logical conclusions like spotting which is the bigger room from CO2 timelines. 🌬 They had formed up all the traditional ideas on ventilation like opening windows or having breaks between classes. But they were also happy to think outside the box, like need for larger classrooms and using a fan with an open window. ⁉ We started off with the idea that we could use indoor climate monitoring not just to hypothesize about classroom indoor climate but also to improve IAQ literacy among school children. We managed to get there through an interaction session, two weeks of data logging, going over the data together to see what was happening 🔎, likely reasons when things go wrong and plausible solutions. 👉 One important realization was that the more the number of interactions, the more likely you are to reach the children in a meaningful manner. Instead of being there once to talk about indoor climate, deploy the monitors and then focusing on data, multiple interactions means the kids realize that this is something important to you as well. Thanks to Mette Hejn, Pawel Wargocki, and Jørn Toftum for helping make these interactions possible. 🌡️ Adapting to Extreme Weather: School Closures and Adjusted Timings in the North Region🌡️ Due to the severe heat wave, the government has closed schools for students up to grade 8 until May 24th, and adjusted hours for older students to 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. While this is necessary for safety, it significantly impacts students, especially those who travel long distances, and disrupts their education. 🔸Health and Safety: Long commutes in extreme heat can be dangerous. Parents should ensure children stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak heat. 🔸Educational Impact: School closures affect learning, particularly for younger students who benefit from in-person instruction. Remote learning is an admirable effort but has its own challenges. 🔸Long-term Solutions: This highlights the need for discussions on climate change and sustainable practices to prevent future extreme weather events. Let's support each other during this time. Stay safe and cool! #HeatWave #SchoolClosure #CommunitySupport #ClimateAction #Education

Climate change is impacting students in ways we can't ignore. Rising temperatures and extreme weather disrupt learning, with vulnerable communities bearing the brunt of the challenge. Here are TPL, we know the solution lies just outside the classroom. Our community schoolyards program transforms asphalt-covered schoolyards into vibrant, green, and climate-resilient spaces that provide shade, cool the environment, and support student success. Every child deserves a place to learn and play that’s safe from the impacts of a changing climate. Let’s work together to ensure that future generations can thrive. 🌍📚 Climate change isn’t just about the environment; it’s impacting classrooms too. From extreme heat to disrupted routines, students are feeling the pressure. Let’s connect the dots and push for solutions that protect both our planet and their future. 💡💪 Key Takeaways: 🔥 Elevated temperatures in classrooms without adequate cooling systems can impair students' ability to concentrate and perform well academically. 🎒 Extreme heat poses health risks to students, leading to heat-related illnesses that can result in absenteeism and decreased participation in school activities. 🏫 Schools lacking climate-resilient infrastructure are more susceptible to disruptions during extreme weather events, affecting the continuity of education. Solutions: 🌎 Upgrading school facilities to withstand extreme weather conditions can minimize disruptions and provide safer learning environments. Installing air conditioning systems and utilizing natural ventilation can help maintain optimal classroom temperatures, enhancing students' comfort and focus. 👩⚖️Encouraging policymakers to prioritize climate adaptation measures in educational planning can ensure long-term resilience of the education system. Addressing the intersection of climate change and education is crucial for safeguarding students' health and academic success. Proactive measures can help build a more resilient education system capable of adapting to the evolving climate landscape. #ClimateChange #StudentSuccess #EnvironmentalJustice #SustainableFuture #YouthEmpowerment #EducationForAll #ActOnClimate #GreenSchools #FutureIsBright #WeAreISC3 Link to Article: https://bit.ly/3Cg3Z7X

Schools across the US are leading on climate. Today DOE announced the Renew America’s Schools Prize to fund energy efficiency, heat pumps, and clean energy. As a mother of two school-aged children, I am incredibly grateful for school leaders who are cutting emissions at their schools to curb the climate crisis and create healthier learning environments. They are making the world a better place for today’s children and future generations. Thank you to all the leaders in the #BidenHarris Administration who support our #schoolsclimate, cut energy costs, and emissions. Our school infrastructure now has a new role to play – that of ‘climate refuge’…. At present, on extreme heat or cold or rain hitting an area, the first impulse is to close all schools, in the belief that children will be better off at home. But those in government schools, might be in greater danger in dwellings ill-equipped to protect them from temperatures extremes or a heavy downpour. As a society taking responsibility for children’s safety and well-being in the climate-change era, we need to re-design, re-furbish and develop schools as shelters from climate adversities. An added advantage – learning will face less disruption with children already present in school.
