21 years in HR. 1st role was a Benefits Administrator 2nd was Branch Administration (full cycle HR) 3rd was Contract Services Consultant (full cycle HR) 4th was a Recruiter 5th was an Executive Recruiter for IT 6th was HR Coordinator 7th was HR Specialist 8th was HR Manager 9th HR Manager 10th Indigenous HR Consultant 11th HR Advisor 12th HR Specialist 13th HR Governance, Nursing Recruiter, HR Generalist 14th Leader, Indigenous Recruitment & Retention 7 of these roles I experienced significant psychological harm in the workplace and still carry trauma from the experience. One role in particular the CEO screamed in my face and threatened me that he “would put the fear of god in me”. So…today I feel really proud but I’m not “lucky”. I worked hard and there were lots of moments I had to fight to do what I love. HR is so exciting to me and through all of it, I knew it should bring people to discovering their journeys in their work. I really believe in honouring people’s dreams for themselves. I want others to do the thing they are curious about and love it so much they beam with joy. I believe in sitting with people when they feel they’ve failed because failure feels sad but it isn’t just that, it’s growth. Not all HR professionals are like me. I want my chosen profession to always be striving to be kind, supportive, and inviting. DEAR HR NEWBIES LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING YOU PROBABLY ALREADY KNOW Breaking into HR at the entry-level can be challenging. One reason is that many small companies don’t hire dedicated HR staff as they often assume they don’t need one. By the time they are ready for HR support, they typically seek out more experienced professionals (makes sense). So, what’s the solution then? Consider targeting Admin Assistant roles These positions often expose you to HR-related tasks, allowing you to gain on-the-job training and develop essential skills. Start there, build your foundation, and grow your experience; it will set you on the path to your HR career. The variety and ranking of HR positions can be confusing if you have little experience with the field. If you're interested in an HR career, however, it's important to know what jobs you might qualify for or get promoted to as you progress in your career. In this article, i'll explain the hierarchy of HR job titles and how to advance in an HR career path. What is HR? Human resources, or HR, is the department within a company responsible for the hiring and development of its employees. A company's HR staff manages all payroll, benefits and administrative tasks for employees. They also handle employee relations and resolve conflicts. Human resources departments are important because they help a company increase productivity while also maintaining employee satisfaction. Other reasons HR departments are important to include: 1. Setting competitive salary and benefits plans to attract talented employees. 2. Providing employees with a safe place to work by ensuring that the company follows occupational safety and health rules. 3. Resolving workplace issues between employees and employers. 4. Organizing orientation and training for new and existing hires. 5. Assessing employees’ job satisfaction and ways to improve it. 6. Creating a smooth process for recruiting, evaluating, interviewing and hiring skilled individuals. 7. Making sure the company follows employment laws. Businesses in all industries often hire a variety of HR professionals to meet these responsibilities. Bigger companies typically require a larger HR department with more specialized positions than smaller companies. HR job hierarchy Human resources departments often build a hierarchy of jobs, each level containing employees who may support others or perform specialized duties. This ranking helps ensure the department operates smoothly and meets the company’s personnel needs. Here's a list of human resources job levels a company might have: a.
