As a translator, I'm fascinated by how food names vary across Arabic-speaking countries. It's not just about different dialects; sometimes it's about entirely different words!🍜🍝🍲 Take "okra" for example. I once had to translate this word and was stumped. In standard Arabic, it's بامية, but I'd never heard this term before. Why? In Algeria, we call it قناوية. Even more interesting, I'm from western Algeria, and I realized I'd never even seen this vegetable in local cuisine. It's either not commonly used or goes by another name I'm unfamiliar with. This experience opened my eyes to the rich diversity within Arabic culinary vocabulary. It also highlighted a crucial aspect of translation: understanding regional variations and local context is key to accurate communication. Have you encountered similar surprises in your work or travels? Share your food translation stories 👇🏼 -------- Hello! 👋🏼 I'm Asma, junior translator at Aurora Hikma . One of the things I enjoy about translation is discovering new terms and expanding my knowledge. Recently, while working on a project, I came across the term "Passive Income." 💵 Initially, I didn’t know much about it, but after some research, I learned that passive income is money you can earn with minimal effort, without working a traditional job. It can come from sources like rental properties or dividend stocks. There are many ways to generate passive income, and I believe everyone should have a source of it. Do you have a source of passive income? 💰 _ _ _ _ _ _ Hi 🙋♀️ I’m Aya, a Project Manager and Senior Editor at Aurora Hikma . CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT. SATISFACTION BROUGHT IT BACK 🐱 Hey there! I’m on a fascinating journey that not everyone gets to experience – transforming expertly crafted sentences from one language into another. Most of my clients are content with just receiving their translated texts, but every now and then, I meet folks who are just as curious as I am, eager to delve into the nitty-gritty of the process. 🤓 Being a naturally curious person with a passion for learning and sharing knowledge, I absolutely love it when someone wants to understand the finer details of the translations I provide. I remember this one time I was working with a client who wanted some branding copy translated. She was keenly interested, so I walked her through the entire process on a whim, explaining why I picked each word with care. Although she doesn't speak a word of Arabic, she was absolutely thrilled with the result. She thanked me repeatedly for letting her glimpse the beautiful intricacies of the Arabic language. 🌟 - - - - - Looking for help reaching Emirati and Saudi audiences? 🇸🇦🇦🇪 I run Aurora Hikma, a digital agency specializing in Arabic translation and content creation. We all know the importance of staying up-to-date... As December 2nd approaches, this is your reminder not to call it the UAE National Day, as it was rebranded last year to Union Day. You might say, but it means the same thing. Yes. No. Both yes and no. I'll explain: ❌ UAE National Day = generic, same as any other country ✅ Union Day = branded, local, relevant Yes, it is still a national day, but it has its own spin, making it stand out. The same applies in Arabic as well, so if your brand puts out content in Arabic, make sure it is up-to-date with the new name of the holiday. Last year, we saw many instances where we were translating content for our clients and we had to remind their English writers to fix this over and over 😳 I'd like to thank Heba AlNabulsi ♾️ for her community, which allows me to stay one step ahead–she'd shared the new branding right on time as I was reviewing Arabic captions for one of our agency clients last year! - - - - - Looking for help reaching Emirati and Saudi audiences? 🇸🇦🇦🇪 I run Aurora Hikma, a digital agency specializing in Arabic translation and content creation. WHY EMBRACING AN ARABIC STRATEGY IS A WIN-WIN FOR YOU! 🌟 Let's chat about a little something: every market comes with its own set of puzzles, and in the UAE, one of the most colorful of these is language diversity. Of course, English is widely spoken, but when the day is done, Arabic is the official language and all the locals are fluent Arabic speakers. But it's not just about the Emiratis! There are around 2 million more Arabic speakers living in the UAE. Many of these folks use English at work and Arabic at home. Plus, Arabic is a must-have for many customer-facing roles. Yet, it often feels like businesses treat Arabic as an optional extra, something they can overlook if they want to. I believe this is a missed opportunity. In my view, any B2C business operating in an Arab country should make Arabic the heart and soul of their operations. 💡 So, what do I mean by an Arabic strategy? Well, it's a plan to reach out to Arabic speakers. It starts with your product and branding and extends to your content and customer service. I see fantastic work done in English with all kinds of inclusivity and awareness campaigns. But I don't see the same effort in Arabic. 🤔 You might say, "They already speak English. Why should I go the extra mile to talk to them in Arabic?" To that, I'd ask, "Do you know if they consume more content in Arabic or English?" A quick peek at their phones could give you a hint: are their interfaces in English or Arabic? You might be surprised that many of your English-speaking Arab friends have their phones' default language set to Arabic! 📱 - - - - - Looking for help reaching Emirati and Saudi audiences? 🇸🇦🇦🇪 I run Aurora Hikma, a digital agency specializing in Arabic translation and content creation.
