🌟 **Empowering Dental Health for a Healthier Future** 🌟 Instead of solely focusing on removing diseased tissue in the mouth, we should prioritise swift treatment using SDF (Silver Diamine Fluoride), eliminating outdated regulatory barriers and empowering dental health ambassadors throughout the dental team. Our role in preventing dental disease is crucial in improving our nation's overall health. Dentistry should be central in an integrated health service, even if our NHS can’t afford it. We must empower trained dental nurses to deliver health advice, use modern technology for dental assessments, and apply preventive treatments. As explained in the video, this approach can significantly aid vulnerable populations. The General Dental Council (GDC) must support the public and the profession. Over my career, I've observed a concerning trend where dentists are driven out of the profession, often due to a discredited health delivery system policed by the GDC. It needs to "To protect, promote and maintain the health, safety, and well-being of the public". The DGC is currently failing us all. “Prevention is indeed better than cure”—an activity historically delivered by dental hygienists. In the USA, there is one hygienist for every dentist; in the UK, this ratio is one hygienist for every six dentists 🤔 We have the wrong ratio of training that will keep failing in the long term. From a business perspective, universities find training dentists more financially viable than hygienists and nurses. However, as a service, we need a greater focus on training nurses, hygienists, and dentists in that order. To create a truly integrated health service, we need more accessible apprenticeships across all fields. Six underused day-release courses for Oral Health Practitioner level 4 apprenticeships exist throughout the UK for the 60,000+ registered dental nurses. The most essential skills in healthcare are often interpersonal and cannot easily be measured by academic achievements alone. Let's prioritise health and empower our dental workforce for the betterment of all. We can’t afford to deliver more treatment. For more information on the apprenticeships:- https://lnkd.in/e9CfX_k5 #DentalHealth #PreventiveCare #Empowerment #Healthcare #Apprenticeships #OralHealth #PublicHealth #Nursing #Hygiene #Dentistry #HealthEquity

How is that >98% of Danes have a GP? Part of the answer lies in their approach to training physicians. Here's a summary of some of what I've learned on my trip to Denmark 🇩🇰 After high school, most Danes take a gap year where they typically work and travel (the average is 2 gap years but several take even more). They would then apply and gain admission to medical school which is 6 years in total. After graduating from medical school, every new doctor does a one year "internship" of sorts, 6 months of which is in a GP practice and the other 6 months in a hospital. Where they do this internship is based on luck. They draw numbers and choose the location based on numerical order. If you draw 10, you pretty much have your pick of spots. If you're 450, you'll have pretty limited choices left. Following the internship, they apply and get selected into an orientation for a specialty program. This orientation is 6 months for GPs (remember they already did 6 months in their internship) and 1 year for other specialties. It's a time for residents to assess whether the specialty is the right fit for them and vice versa. When they complete the orientation, residents can apply for an orientation to another specialty area if they choose. On average, most residents do two orientations. When they are sure which specialty they want to pursue, they apply and are selected to a residency program. Residency training is 4.5 years for GPs and 5 years for other specialties. In the GP residency, trainees spend 30 months on hospital rotations and a 6 month, 6 month and 12 month block in 3 different general practices. Notably, the GP residency increased from 3.5 years to 5 years in 2003. I've been told that this change actually made it easier to recruit trainees to become GPs and that following the change, GP incomes increased. GPs now, on average, make about the same or more than colleagues in other specialties. There are a few interesting features of the physician training pathway in Denmark: -all specialists gain a foundation in family medicine through the internship year -the location of the internship year is based on a lottery, exposing trainees to communities across the country and likely increasing the chances of them settling in a more rural area -trainees have a chance to try out different specialties with the orientation year -GP training is about the same length as other specialty training I think elements of this training pathway are part of the reason why general practice is highly respected in Denmark and paid as well as other specialties. Pay and respect in turn influence recruitment and retention of the GP workforce. PS. the photo here is a wall of some of the 170+ residents trained at the practice I visited (more on that later!)

I read an article today about the benefits and expertise of Flight Nursing, a branch of nursing that focuses on the safe and rapid transport of critically ill patients. My dream career is to become a Flight Nurse. One part of the article I liked is when it discussed the benefits and life-saving capabilities provided by flight care. The article says, “With the increase in use of AMS has come an increase in the level of severity of illness and injury of transported patients. Those once considered too sick to transport are now being transported more frequently and over longer distances. Managing acutely or critically ill patients during the transport process differs in several ways and presents different challenges from care in other acute care nursing settings.” I like how this shows the benefits of Flight Nursing and shows how or can save many lives! The benefits of highly trained staff that are quick to think will benefit everyone who works with them, in flight and in the hospital. https://lnkd.in/d4zCHUtP #alpinecteinternships, #mountainlandcte, Alpine School District CTE Internships

This is how you build a strong #health system and make #primarycare an easy choice for #medical graduates. I love what #Europe does for its citizens in #healthcare. That said, as a #healthtech #entrepreneur, I learned quickly that to build an early stage #venture, I needed to have focus on one customer type in one system, low #legal and #compliance costs, and fast path to scaling. So, I needed to build in the U.S., not try trans-Atlantic partnerships too early. As it is, the U.S. is already very fragmented and complicated, with multiple payers and stakeholders. Really would love to have this access for myself and to work in a system like this. Imagine my health and lifespan would improve and extend.

Did you know that the average international medical student will pay in excess of half a million dollars in tuition alone? The NSW Government is scratching their head and wondering why these Doctors are packing up and leaving in numbers and the truth truly is in the numbers! A graduate Doctor will earn $38 p/h, these Doctors are the same ones who see you in the ED, treat you on the wards and prescribe your discharge medications. This hourly rate tops out at $49 unless the Doctor chooses to battle it out with their colleagues for a position on a speciality training program which on a best case scenario can take up to 10 years and the annual salary whilst completing training will max out at $139,000. Noting that the average age of a medical specialist in Australia is above 50. I don't have to ask you to know that chances are you've been turned away by a GP who is "booked out for weeks". Many of these niggling problems turn into big ones and patients wind up in the Emergency Department with that sore ear thats now unbearable. Sitting on an uncomfortable plastic seat, wondering if you would be more comfortable at home in bed dealing with the pain rather than watching the sun come up in the confines of a germ infested waiting room. You probably warrant further treatment but the ED is jammed packed and all the beds are full so you receive two panadol and are sent home with the instruction to "follow up with your GP" despite having tried to do this numerous times without success. There are more Australian trained Doctors wanting to take up jobs as General Practitioners than there are funded training positions for General Practitioners. The Government's solution is to IMPORT more overseas trained doctors who have not undertaken any formal education or training in Australia and start putting them to work. This is the Government equivalent of "taking 2 panadol and following up with your GP". There are hundreds of Doctors who have completed medical school here in NSW who are keen to commence training as a GP, unfortunately the Government who are scratching their heads as to why 1/3 of NSW Doctors will leave to take up employment interstate after internship, are making it more difficult for doctors to begin training in an attempt to retain them in public hospitals for longer. Let me remind you of where we started, a $500k course fee for international students who will then go on to earn $38 per hour? If you invested that $500k in property before you started medical school you would be years in front. https://lnkd.in/gwWHdTYb
