“Shut up and listen, I am a Top Voice” I recently suggested a people-first approach (putting people before their disabilities) to a self-proclaimed “Top 100 Voice for Disabled People” - and got shut down. Rude? I don’t care. But it’s worrying when someone with a decent following silences other perspectives in a space that should celebrate diversity. > Disability and inclusion are not defined by a one-size-fits-all language > People first is always better > Real progress comes from listening to many voices, not just the loudest. Building a Future That Includes Everyone! Have you ever been judged not for your abilities but for something you can't control? Imagine being excluded simply because of your appearance or a condition you were born with. For many people with disabilities, this is their everyday reality. Throughout history, people with disabilities have been marginalized. From being treated as "freaks" to being hidden away, they've often been denied basic humanity. Even today, many still struggle with limited support and inadequate resources to meet their daily needs. Through my research, I found that many people with disabilities aren’t hired, not because they lack skills, but simply because of their condition. Their talents are ignored, denying them the dignity they deserve. This is not just a local issue; it's happening globally. People with disabilities don’t need pity, they need real opportunities to be included, to work, and to live independently. 🌍 International Day of Persons with Disabilities 💜 Today, we honor the resilience and strength of individuals with disabilities, while also reflecting on the challenges they face daily. 💡 Challenges in Society & the Workplace: 🔹 Physical Barriers: Inaccessible buildings, transport, or facilities can make daily tasks an uphill battle. 🔹 Social Stigma: Assumptions about their abilities often lead to exclusion or condescension. 🔹 Workplace Inequity: Lack of reasonable accommodations, unequal opportunities, or being overlooked for promotions. 🔹 Microaggressions: Thoughtless comments like “You’re so inspiring just for being here” can feel patronizing. 💬 How Words Impact Confidence: Language shapes perception. Using terms like “confined to a wheelchair” instead of “uses a wheelchair” or labeling someone as “disabled” rather than a “person with a disability” can reduce their identity to their condition. Make the Invisible Visible 🌟 Today, on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, I’m thinking about how many of us live with invisible disabilities—70-80% of all disabilities, in fact.   At #Sodexo, we’re taking steps to make sure everyone feels safe and supported, including through self-identification. Self-identification gives people the chance to share their stories in a way that feels right for them, helping us: ❤️ Build trust and understanding. ❤️ Offer better support and resources. ❤️ Create a workplace where everyone belongs. Today, December 3rd, we celebrate The International Day of Persons with Disabilities—a day to honor the strength, contributions, and rights of people with disabilities worldwide. People like my incredible daughter, Frankie. 🧡💙 This year’s theme, “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future,” highlights the importance of disability-inclusive leadership. As a mum to a child with disabilities and complex needs, I see every day how much potential, resilience, and brilliance people with disabilities bring to the world when given the opportunity to thrive. Because a person needs more, doesn’t mean they are less deserving of a good life. More needs to be done in healthcare, education, law, NDIS, government, community and society to support, embrace and include people with disabilities. Equal rights are human rights.
