'Have I received recognition or praise for doing good work in the last seven days?' Such an interesting question. It's so easy to say a lot of 'thankyou's that really do not consider the contributions of individual colleagues. We did really well for teacher retention, despite some wider discontent within the profession and the fact that we were a large school that served a community with significant numbers of disadvantaged families. So what was the secret? How do you attract and retain staff? I discovered two things that worked for us. Firstly, duty of care. I'm not into hot chocolates and head massages to enable staff to feel valued in school. Instead, I'm a big believer in discharging a well considered duty of care. Making sure that I have good relationships with all, checking in everyday, giving them what they need, considering workload, and being receptive to feedback. Secondly, I don't think we do a very good job at giving meaningful recognition. We can be guilty of sitting in the staffroom and saying 'thankyou, you've all been great', but a 'look me in the eye and tell me exactly what I'm doing well' is a very different thing. This is usually due to time, and work getting in the way. Once I discovered how much our team thrived on sincere recognition, I could prioritise these channels. This is because it's not just about recognition from me, but our parents, children, governors and each other. I created a portal on the website for parents to email staff praise and thankyou's. I texted the staff at the end of Friday afternoon. I sought feedback from the children to casually drop into morning classroom chats. The governors spent more time in school recognising the efforts of the staff and giving individual feedback formally and informally. I made same day feedback a priority from learning walks, observations or just the good stuff I saw when dropping into classes everyday. As a result, very few staff left school and we were never short of applications. Nobody expects you to provide chocolate biscuits in the staffroom, or give them a day off, but everyone does expect to feel valued in the workplace. It's not an easy job, but we all thrive on recognition and the validation that someone else has noticed how hard you are working, and how much your children are benefitting from who you are. https://lnkd.in/eGsprbw6
Suddenly, I felt as if I had unlocked a new layer of language to describe my dissatisfaction of working as a school teacher, because my answer to so many of these questions would be a resounding no.' #leadership #headship #teacher #teaching https://lnkd.in/eeJTexcx
