Do you think middle-managers add value to a company? I'm very hard against middle-managers for a long long time, years before all the tech giants started to get rid of them. I have always taken inspiration from a business man in Japan that made his fortune buying struggling tech companies, firing all the middle-managers, and giving the engineers a pay raise. Working with middle-managers (important: that ONLY middle-manage) has given me the impression most teams would be more efficient without them. It's also a brain-drain, because they often get paid more for doing basically nothing all day. So most of the best engineers and sales people try to become middle-managers. The Bayer CEO seems to agree with my take on middle-managers, taking a very extreme stance:

Surprisingly, the most significant news in recent times in organisational design, Bayer's bold move towards self-management, has largely escaped the attention of technical circles despite its potential impact to innovate on how we work. https://lnkd.in/geqfyx3t As Frederic Laloux wrote, organisational evolution can't be forced, but "nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come" :) It reminds us of the agile principle of putting humans above tools and processes. Technical leaders able to embrace that over the safety of categorising their employees in the different buckets with the latest automation tools have a bigger chance to build organisations that achieve what may look like impossible results.
