💡 What if schools in Malaysia didn’t have exams? Imagine a classroom where students aren’t defined by grades or how well they perform on a single test. Instead, they’re encouraged to explore their interests, develop critical skills, and truly enjoy learning. Sounds idealistic, right? But maybe it’s time we start asking the question: Do exams really reflect a child’s potential? 📖 As a teacher, I’ve seen firsthand how exam pressure impacts students. Some thrive under it, but many struggle—often at the cost of their confidence, creativity, and love for learning. Now, don’t get me wrong—assessment is important. But should it always look like a three-hour paper in a silent hall? What about: 🔹 Working on group projects that teach collaboration? 🔹 Creating portfolios that show growth over time? 🔹 Reflecting on real-world skills like problem-solving and communication? Change isn’t easy, and it won’t happen overnight. But if we want to prepare our children for a future that values adaptability and innovation, maybe it’s time we rethink how we measure success. ✨ What do you think? Can Malaysia embrace a system that focuses on holistic development rather than just grades? Let’s start a conversation—because every child deserves an education that inspires, not just measures. #EducationForTheFuture #Malaysia #NoExams #LetThemShine

🌟 A Tale of Transformation in Education! 🌟 By Emily John and Melor Md Yunus from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Once upon a time, the world of education was turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic. 🦠 While the challenges were daunting, this turbulent time also sparked an unexpected shift in how we learn English. Suddenly, traditional classrooms fell silent, and students found themselves navigating a new landscape dominated by social media. Platforms like Telegram, Facebook, and WhatsApp emerged as lifelines, providing a way to connect and practice speaking skills outside the confines of a classroom. 📱💬 Though anxiety and uncertainty loomed large, learners began to discover new confidence in their abilities. No longer bound by the fear of speaking up in class, they shared thoughts and ideas in a more relaxed environment, turning virtual chats into valuable practice sessions. 🎤✨ Educators, too, adapted to this new normal, utilizing social media to create engaging lessons that reached students wherever they were. Learning became a fluid experience, happening in homes, parks, and coffee shops—blurring the lines between work and play. ☕️🌍 So here’s to the resilience of learners and educators alike, navigating the challenges together and finding innovative ways to keep the spirit of learning alive, even in the toughest times. 📚💖 https://lnkd.in/gyuCXMQb This entry is adapted from the peer-reviewed paper https://lnkd.in/gfVq5ptp Sustainability MDPI #EducationTransformation #SocialMediaInLearning #ResilienceInEducation

Here's my 2024 LinkedIn Rewind, by Coauthor (abbrev): This year brought significant transition and growth in my educational journey. Moving from South Korea to Malaysia as Head of Faculty (Individuals & Societies) at The International School of Penang (Uplands) reinforced a core belief - that effective education balances structured guidance with student inquiry, fostering academic excellence with international mindedness. The ECIS Teaching and Pedagogy Certificate program provided valuable opportunities to validate current practices while exploring innovative approaches to student-centered learning. Workshops reinforced how metacognition, modeling, and scaffolding create powerful learning environments, challenging students' preconceived ideas and developing critical thinking skills. Looking ahead to 2025, my focus remains on constructing teacher-directed frameworks, balancing structured guidance with student inquiry, empowering students to engage meaningfully with the world around them.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ. let me take you back to four years ago during my studies in Malaysia, amidst a pandemic, an extraordinary event unfolded during our exams. Due to restrictions, we couldn't physically attend, so our lecturer sent exam materials as PDFs. Unexpectedly, these documents included Quranic verses, urging us to swear to uphold honesty during the exams. This unique measure underscored the importance of integrity in academic pursuits, fostering unity among students. Despite the challenges, it reinforced our commitment to academic integrity Lessons: • Adaptability is Key: Even during tough times like a pandemic, finding creative solutions helps keep education going. • Honesty Matters: Being truthful and not cheating is important in school and life. • Respect Differences: Including everyone's beliefs fosters a positive environment and helps build trust.

Things that don’t automatically make you smart: 1. Speaking perfect English. 2. Having gone to Ivy League schools. 3. Being employed at MAANG. 4. Living abroad. Things that don’t automatically make you dumb: 1. Speaking less than perfect or broken English. 2. Having gone to non-prestigious schools. 3. Working at start ups or not working for a while. 4. Living in India. Just a gentle reminder! :)

If I wanted evidence of the declining education standards in Malaysia, I did not have to look far. An intern who reported for work today wanted me to sign certain documents and a letter to her institute of higher learning. A cursory glance of the documents showed that the institute of higher learning could not even write the name of my firm and the address of my firm correctly and misspelt my name as Managing Partner of Zubir Chang & Co. PLT. The letter which she prepared for me to sign repeated the same errors committed by the institute of higher learning. Which means that students no longer bother about checking facts and details when preparing documentation. If certain details are prepared by another party, it must therefore be correct. What are the institutes of higher learning teaching Malaysians? No wonder the PISA scores in Malaysia are falling off a cliff.
