Not only is ISO 42001 risk based but it also includes a requirement to perform an A.I System Impact Assessment, considering impacts on individuals or groups of individuals and societies. Managing the impacts of A.I systems is likely to be key to complying with global A.I legislation and regulation in the future. Using ISO 42001 for your A.I management system provides a structured framework for managing risks, impacts and legal compliance. #iso42001 #ai #artificialintelligence #aiimpact #isocertification #growwithiso

AI is making its presence well and truly known both in our personal and business lives. Awareness on the risks and, in particular, compliance is woefully lacking. With the 2 year compliance clock for the EU AI Act ticking now is the right time to start planning your compliance journey. ISO42001 is a great stepping stone towards EU AI Act compliance. Whilst ISO42001 is very new to the stage, organisations that are ISO27001 certified are already part of the way to being compliant to ISO42001. Whilst there are some differences the concept is the same. I'll be starting a weekly informational one minute read on the ways your current compliance scope will go a long way to help you on your journey. I'll be sharing risk assessment tips, documentation requirements (maybe even some templates) and awareness of the synergy between ISO27001, ISO42001 and the EU AI Act. So stay tuned for the upcoming weekly "WaiT a Minute" posts.

Great insights from Sarah Clarke as always. I completely agree with the perspective that certification is just one part of the AI governance story. Before jumping into certification, CTOs and CIOs should start by conducting a self assessment, using an approach such as Attercop’s AI Governance framework (our assessment is guided by the draft of the UKGov AI Management Essentials tool - link below). This helps assess your requirements in line with your organisation’s unique risk appetite, operational needs, and regulatory requirements. ISO 42001 is likely to play a part in our organisational AI journeys (just as ISO 27001 has become a de facto part of our cybersecurity maturity), but it’s not just about gaining a certification as a ‘hygiene factor’; it’s about making pragmatic decisions on AI governance and whether the framework provides meaningful value for your specific AI use cases - and whether in doing so it helps manage your organisation’s AI risks effectively. A structured approach, starting with assessment and then leading to action, ensures you focus on what truly matters - implementing governance that fits your context rather than chasing compliance for its own sake. #AIAssurance #AIRisk #ISO42001 #Governance
This is an excerpt from Anthropic's ISO 42001 certification announcement. An external accredited assessment body has deemed their AI Management System (AIMS) compliant with the standard. But what does that mean to Anthropic model integrators, or users that want to 'borrow' related comfort to show potential internal and external customers? We have plenty of ISO 27001 veterans who will understand this - the Information Security Management System (ISMS) with similar structure. This is about capability and structures to govern within the scope of the management system, not about any particular risk profile. People may be diligently documenting and managing a set of broken things, with essential elements outside AIMS scope, albeit with AIMS elements that help gain traction for improvements. It is largely use case agnostic as this is in foundation model context for a mainly general purpose AI vendor. We know such standards are only as good as their scope (or Statement of Applicability). Both the elements of the organisation (policies, standards, governance structures, risk and impact assessments, tools, processes, people, means to monitor and maintain on a rolling basis) and the specifics of risk appetites, benchmarks, controls, and assessments. The desire, effort, and expense to show workings out and have an independent assessment should offer some comfort, but the fact of certification is just part of the story. At a minimum you want to see the scope. Does it mean robust management of all the things that impact your downstream risk? How much residual risk do you have to manage? If things aren't fit for your purpose, can the supplier change them? Replies link to some of that scope information and the full announcement. I'm all for things that give AI governance some structure and edges. Just keen to give the structure and edges some context.
