This initiative is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education that combines rigorous coursework with hands-on laboratory experience. We believe that internships play a crucial role in bridging the gap between academic training and practical application. We’re encouraging all other students who applied and met the criteria to be posted to be patient as our next set of students will start their postings soon. #HOLIDAYLABPOSTINGS# #PIPETTE&SERUMINTOPENANDINK# #EDUCATION&EXCHANGECOMMITTEE ALMS-SL

September 20th is #WhyApply Day in Tennessee! One of my top reasons for choosing APSU - community. Professors, mentors, and peers helped push me to excel in many ways. I had opportunities to showcase my work and knowledge in research competitions, and an on-campus internship. These connections have turned into life-long friends. At APSU, there’s someone who will help you achieve your dreams and goals. #LetsGoPeay 🎩🧐 #CollegeApplicationandExplorationMonth

I am so happy to meet with our students — whether it’s 2 or 12 or 20:— to learn about their Cougar Experience, what we do well, and areas we could do better. Today we spent quite a bit of time on internships. #GoCoogs #studentaffairs #studentsuccess #highereducation #studentvoice
Dr. Daniel Maxwell, our Associate VC/VP of Student Affairs, hosted “Donuts with Dr. Dan” session with his fellow colleagues Dr. Monica Thompson, Executive Director of University Career Services and Dr. Anne Dayton, Director of the Cougar Initiative to Engage (CITE). The students shared their perspectives about internship opportunities and their cougar experience. The conversation was insightful, affirming, and filled with helpful feedback on the students experiences at UH. Thanks for coming out to chat, Coogs! Check out this cool article about our former intern, Shira Goldhaber-Gordon, who discusses (among other things) the effect of interning at the Institute for Computing in Research. https://lnkd.in/dYgfwN5j
“My favorite part of interning at the Laboratory was talking with other interns and staff scientists about intriguing scientific problems,” Shira Goldhaber-Gordon said about her Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) experience! $217,000 in internship scholarships were awarded by CLA’s Office of Undergraduate Education in the 2023-24 school year. This financial support immensely increases students’ access to internships. Internship completion is closely linked to positive post-graduation outcomes. Yet, financial barriers are among the top challenges for CLA students. Prioritizing unpaid internships, these scholarships help more students gain valuable experience without financial strain. Support our mission to remove these barriers to opportunity—every contribution helps create success for CLA students. #UMNGive at z.umn.edu/clagtmd

Chronic absenteeism is a symptom of a lack of student engagement. In this month’s Kappan, read how one Rhode Island high school addresses this challenge by offering students an interest-based learning approach that includes hands-on learning through internships. I’m so happy that this program exists and many congrats to the recipients. Providing funding for grad students who have found non-paid internships is a great first step to facing the reality of the lack of tenure-track (TT) positions and simply preferring an industry career. However, I’ll always take it one step further. Humanities/social sciences grad students receive among, if not, the lowest PhD stipends at Carolina. Since I’m not in the academic job market, I’m unfamiliar with the available number of TT social science professorships but my hypothesis is they are also low. My question is, how is the UNC Graduate School preparing humanities/social science grad students to find PAID internships? As a Carolina grad student, I took it upon myself to find my internship and create my own path. How can University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill continue to do more and do better for its grad students to truly grow with North Carolina and the South?
This summer, #UNC launched Bridge Beyond Carolina, a new initiative providing funding for students to pursue nonfaculty career by completing an internship outside the University that would otherwise be unpaid. According to Dean Dr. Beth Mayer-Davis, the program is a product of the Graduate School's strategic goal of “growing with North Carolina” and aligns with the school’s mission to produce highly qualified graduates who are ready to make an impact on North Carolina's workforce Discover how the program expands professional opportunities for graduate students https://unc.live/3LpeOWb

The National Association of Colleges and Employers says that students with internship are more likely to be male, white students who are not first generation, and students who are not recipients of Pell grants. Northern Essex Community College is working to disrupt this pattern, making internships available to all it community college students, including those in liberal arts. For those who want to learn more about the future of academic internships, the The Chronicle of Higher Education has an interesting webinar on the subject: https://lnkd.in/e_4JXNwT

One of the reasons I love the fall is that I get to go back on college campuses and connect with some amazing students! This Thursday I have the joy of heading to the UMKC Henry W. Bloch School of Management for Coffee & Careers. Students, come join me from 10-12 to learn about what Spotlight does and the job opportunities we have to offer! Plus, how could you say no to some free coffee & pastries from Mildred's? #UMKC #internship #entrylevel
