Local health departments (LHDs) play a crucial role in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from public health emergencies and disasters and, as such, are on the frontlines of the fight against the negative health impacts of climate change. As climate change is a complex issue, a comprehensive strategy that engages nontraditional partners, like Health in All Policies, is needed. NACCHO, with support from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, has created a new resource ‘‘A Health in All Policies approach to addressing the health impacts of climate change’. In this resource, three local health departments —the Boston Public Health Commission, the Pima County Health Department and the City of New Orleans Health Department —discuss how they use Health in All Policies to address the impacts of climate change on their communities. When you think of health crises, you probably think of causes like COVID-19 or influenza and less about environmental or climate-related factors like wildfires and extreme heat. But the truth is, environmental threats must be addressed with the same urgency as other public health issues. This white paper explores environmental determinants of health and solutions to support continued access to medication and health services. #TeamCVS

If the government wants an NHS fit for the future, it needs to weave health into its climate agenda🏥🧠🌦 Climate change is already worsening public health in the UK, from PTSD from flooding, to overheating during heatwaves. But taking action now can reduce health inequalities and build more resilient communities My blog summarising our recent reports on health and climate change⬇
In the UK, the impact of climate change on public health is often overlooked. Between 1995 and 2020, just 41 out of 20,000 parliamentary speeches addressed the link between climate and health issues. As we face more extreme weather, it’s crucial to recognise the full range of health effects, including eco-anxiety, PTSD from flooding, and increased suicide risk during heatwaves.
