There is no disputing that Generative AI is part of our future, but is it one which will define us or ruin us? Even now at this early stage of its use it is said to already account for 1% of all of the world's electricity usage.. Eric Zie will share his views on this and more at this upcoming King's College London panel. Get along if you can.
🤩🤩🤩Very excited to share the panel member information, with guest panel chair Michael Luck and panellists Eric Zie, Federica Sarro, Michael Kölling, Don Syme, Baptiste Rozière and also me😁. More details and the full program: https://lnkd.in/eNkWypca

Transformative technologies such as AI make difficult tasks more accessible and convenient. Since 2018, the use of AI in research has increased drastically, with annual publication rates of 3–5 times higher than pre-2017. Currently, >100,000 manuscripts using AI are published annually within science and engineering, and >20,000 of these belong to the agricultural and environmental fields. Given the magnitude of use, clear communication on how AI is used and how it helps advance scientific knowledge is essential. Clear communication is perhaps more necessary with AI than previous technologies due to its broad and flexible spectrum of uses, the “black-box” nature of deep-learning algorithms, and ongoing debates regarding AI's predictive power versus knowledge of first-principles mechanistic and process-based theories and models. In this commentary, we provide guidelines and discussion points to the scientific community to ensure transparent and effective communication of AI research in agricultural and environmental research publications.

Another Else event goes by - and this time we discussed the idea of fast-follow innovation within regulated environments, using the cruise liner and the speedboat analogy 🛳️ v🚤..... We had a cracking panel (🙏🏻 thanks again team), who shared some great perspectives and ideas on what it takes... While Else presented our take, with some rapid incremental innovations, strategic foresight, and design fiction in the mix. For me, in old money, the boat analogy kind of stacks up – why indeed take the risk and be the speedboat, when a cruise liner can turn up later and dominate? But, times are a changin' with autonomous agents, and emergent legislation on data-portability amongst other things, flipping the script. In the near-future customers will be able to do it for themselves, so it isn't really about simply keeping an eye on the agile upstarts and then swallowing them whole. Besides... a cruise liner can't get to the shore, and that's where the party's at... 🙃. Analogy breakdown. Thanks again to everyone that came, we really enjoyed the discussion and meeting new folks... Our next event will be on Sustainability ♻️🌿🤖.
Tons of practical and thought provoking insights from our panel last week. Thanks again to Rhea Marshall, Tiffany Walker, Tony Lawlor, Mike Chatterton (and Harpreet Bushell for chairing). We will be sharing more in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
