🟧 #OrangeTheWorld 2024: A Gender-Just World is Possible As the #16DaysofActivism Against Gender-Based Violence wrap up today on #HumanRightsDay, we’re taking a moment to reflect on what we’ve achieved together, and the work that remains ahead. This year, through #OrangeTheWorld, we shared our vision of a world where survivors of gender-based crimes find justice and support, where perpetrators are held accountable, and where laws and policies embrace equity and intersectionality. From our campaign launch on November 25 covering topics such as gender persecution and reproductive violence to amplifying gender justice at #ASP23, we stood united with our civil society allies and global movements to end gender-based violence. This #HumanRightsDay, we’re reminded that gender equality isn’t just a goal - it’s the foundation for peaceful and sustainable societies. Building Capacity to Combat Gender-Based Violence Yesterday, I had the privilege of serving as a panelist at the Capacity Building on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) session organised by SMART HUB Gh., in commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The event, themed "Towards Beijing +30: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls", brought together passionate changemakers for an in-depth discussion on the dynamics of GBV, its legal frameworks, and practical strategies for prevention and response. As a firm advocate for gender equality and justice, I shared insights on: ✅ Understanding the root causes and consequences of GBV. ✅ Strengthening legal systems to protect survivors and hold perpetrators accountable. ✅ Empowering young people to lead advocacy efforts in their communities. These conversations are crucial as we collectively work towards creating a safe, inclusive world for women and girls everywhere. The passion and commitment of the participants reaffirmed my belief that lasting change is possible when we work together. To every young person out there: your voice matters. Nkomo-the late. 🤍🕊🕊 As the world prepares to commemorate the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, I am honoured to share my personal commitment to this critical cause. To capacitate myself and contribute meaningfully to the global efforts, I have undertaken a course on Preventing Violence against Women and Promoting Gender Equality in Peace Operations with the esteemed Peace Operations Training Institute.   This milestone marks a significant step in my journey to become a more effective advocate for gender equality and a champion against GBV. Through this course, I have gained valuable insights into the complexities of GBV, its impact on individuals and communities, and the crucial role that peace operations play in preventing and responding to GBV. I am reminded of the countless women and girls around the world who continue to face unimaginable violence; discrimination; and marginalization. Their resilience and courage inspire me to do more, to be more, and to demand more from myself and others. We must continue to challenge harmful norms, advocate for policies and practices that promote gender equality, and support survivors of GBV. 💔 A Wake-Up Call for Gender Equality in Justice The tragic case of Atul Subhash, who felt compelled to take his own life, highlights a harsh reality in our society: the lack of protection and support systems for men facing harassment or mental trauma. If a man commits a mistake, countless organizations stand ready to condemn and take action. Yet, when a man is the victim, where is the support? Why is the narrative often skewed to one side? True equality means equal accountability and protection for all, regardless of gender. Strict and unbiased laws must apply to both men and women to ensure justice prevails. This is not about taking sides—it’s about creating a balanced society where every voice is heard, and every individual feels safe. New zero-tolerance code of conduct - counteracting gender-based violence, including sexual harassment, in the EU research and innovation system ❕ ❗ This document was developed by the ERA Forum sub-group ‘Inclusive Gender Equality in the ERA’, in close cooperation with the European Commission.
