Have a guess what the two most requested items the paramedics get asked for at events? Not sticky plasters or bandages. Not tweezers or antiseptic wipes. Not burn ointment or gauze. Headache tablets…and period products. Does that surprise you? But are period products standard in first aid kits? That’d be a big fat NO. When, as a menstruator, you have ‘that’ accident out and about unexpectedly, unless you’re prepared, near a shop or Dignity Vending Machines, you’re up the bloody creek. So why on earth haven’t period products been a standard in first aid kits before? First aid kits are everywhere. Homes, workplaces, events... but somehow, pads and tampons are left off the list. Which, when you think about it, is wild, because "that" accident happens to half the population all the time. I get why. It’s an oversight. We’ve got centuries of stigma and taboos to shake. Women’s health issues have historically been ignored or sidelined so including something seen as "women's business," for so long in first aid kits would be too obvious. First aid kits are all about treating physical injuries—cuts, scrapes, sprains—while overlooking the fact that managing menstruation is a natural, recurring need for half the population. It’s one of those things that’s not been questioned (until now), even though period products are essential for health, hygiene, and dignity, especially in unexpected situations. Menstruation isn’t considered an emergency or needing first aid care. It’s like hospitals not providing period products to patients. It’s a classic case of an everyday need being left out of the conversation. That’s changing. New Delhi. 7 babies were silenced forever due to a fire in a baby care hospital in Vivek Vihar, the capital of the country, Delhi. Delhi Fire Department and local people were successful in rescuing 12 newborns from the hospital, but 7 of them said goodbye to this world before seeing the world. For the hospital management, this may be just an accident, but what was the fault of those 7 newborns? What was the fault of their parents that they are now suffering this unbearable pain? The question arises that who is responsible for this? After this terrible fire, the relatives of the newborns as well as the local administration are in shock. After the fire incident at Baby Care Hospital in Vivek Vihar, East Delhi and the death of 7 newborns, these 5 big questions are arising:- Question number- 1At what time did the fire break out in the Baby Care Hospital and how long after the incident was the fire department informed about it? This is currently a matter of investigation. It is being told that the fire broke out at 11:32 pm on Saturday night and it was brought under control in about 50 minutes. Question number- 2The second big question is that who was present when the fire broke out in the hospital? Were the security guards present at the Baby Care Hospital at the time of the fire or was any responsible person from the hospital management present in the hospital or not? It has not been ascertained yet who was present from the security department of the hospital when the fire broke out in the hospital. Question number- 3The third and most important question is what arrangements were there for fire safety in the Baby Care Hospital? When the fire broke out, were the fire safety measures in place in the hospital adopted or implemented or not? Let us tell you that under the prescribed provisions, complete arrangements have to be made for fire safety in hospitals, so that in case of a fire, the incident can be dealt with. Question number- 4The fourth question that arises is whether the safety standards in hospitals were checked as per the prescribed parameters before the onset of summer or not? Usually in the summer season when the temperature goes above 40 degrees Celsius, the chances of sparks in the machines and fire due to that increases significantly. Before the onset of summer, an attempt is made to know through drills whether all the equipment related to fire safety are working properly or not. Whether the water supply in the pipe is happening properly or not and whether the motor is working properly or not. Along with this, the fire department team also gives them basic training. A friend recently moved, and while the delivery men were bringing in the washer and dryer, one cut his finger badly, enough that it bled on the stairs and the carpet. The new homeowners couldn’t locate the first aid kit, but fortunately, one was in the delivery truck. As I reviewed the previous blog, I realized there are things I missed that need to be available, especially during summer. And things that we need in our homes. 1-chewable aspirin, 81 mg. You NEVER want to take this without a physician’s ( or PA/NP) advice, but if you think you may be having a heart attack, you are often advised to chew aspirin. Keep a small bottle in your home, first aid kit, or purse, and ensure it isn’t expired. 2-Many first aid kits (including the day hiker one I pictured) include some medications, including acetaminophen, antihistamine, and perhaps chewable aspirin. Check the expiration dates (I just realized that our envelope of aspirin EXPIRED in 2017), and keep them current. 3-butterfly bandages. 4-perhaps aloe Vera, if you have a bad sunburn As I have said, you can buy a First Aid Kit pre-made or make your own.
