UK doctors warn of risk from expanding water beads marketed as toys Doctors have issued a warning over tiny beads that can expand up to 400 times their original size when exposed to liquid, amid reports linking them to serious harm and deaths among children. The water beads are marketed for various purposes, including for use as toys, in crafting, as home decor or in floristry, and are especially popular at Christmas. They are sold under a variety of names including jelly balls, water balls, sensory beads and water crystals. If swallowed, water beads expand and can block the gastrointestinal passage, which may then require surgery. The beads can also cause choking and have harmed children in the UK, with reports linking them to deaths globally. Water beads can be difficult to detect and do not show up in X-rays. On Monday, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) issued a “safety flash” over water beads marketed as toys, amid fears they could be given to young children over the holiday period. It follows a safety alert from the UK’s Office for Product Safety and Standards, which advised that water beads should be kept away from children under five years old, and only used with older children or vulnerable adults under close supervision. Water beads have been linked to child deaths overseas and to “serious harm” to children in the UK, the RCEM said. The beads start small, only a few millimetres wide, but can grow to 400 times their size in about 36 hours when exposed to liquid. The safety alert has been issued to emergency doctors to ensure they know what to look out for while working, but the RCEM also wants to warn parents and carers of the dangers. The RCEM’s alert also highlighted concerns about the potential for children to swallow button or coin batteries and magnets, which pose a danger to children and vulnerable adults if swallowed. The RCEM vice-president Dr Salwa Malik said: “Any one of these three objects could be found under your tree or in a stocking this festive season, hidden in gifts that are intended to bring joy to a child or vulnerable person, but which, if swallowed, could result in critical illness and the need for emergency medical treatment. “As an emergency medicine doctor, I have seen parents holding their child’s hand and watching over them while they lay on a bed in an emergency department, in need of urgent care because they have ingested one of these items. “As a parent, I can imagine how utterly terrifying and traumatic that would be to go through – for a mum, dad, grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, brother, sister and, of course, the child themselves. “Having seen the effects first-hand, which can be devastating and detrimental, we are asking people to please think twice about the dangers these pose while selecting and gifting presents this season.” Let us know your thoughts and Connect with Us for more insights #Newsfeeds #UKHealthUpdate #AssuredBID

We feel home is the safest place for children. But it depends on how safe we keep our home environment for them. Sometimes, without us realizing it, our homes could be unsafe for our kids especially when it comes to unintentional poisoning. Children are by nature inquisitive and sometimes end up consuming stuff out of curiosity. Every year, there are many cases of poisoning with reports of children having consumed household products accidentally. There are many possible sources of accidental poisoning pediatricians come across – kerosene, neem oil, eucalyptus oil, camphor, mosquito repellent, naphthalene balls, perfumes, hand sanitizers, detergent liquid/powder, battery acid, bleaching agents, dish washing soap, toilet cleaner, rodenticide, etc. https://lnkd.in/ghNfy7VQ #KauveryHospital #HomeSafety #HomeSafetyForChildren #ChildrenSafety #ChildSafety #ChildSafe #Emergency #EmergencyManagement #ChildEmergency #ChildCare #PaediatricCare #PaediatricHealth #Children #EmergencyCare #Healthcare

Have a guess what the two most requested items the paramedics get asked for at events? Not sticky plasters or bandages. Not tweezers or antiseptic wipes. Not burn ointment or gauze. Headache tablets…and period products. Does that surprise you? But are period products standard in first aid kits? That’d be a big fat NO. When, as a menstruator, you have ‘that’ accident out and about unexpectedly, unless you’re prepared, near a shop or Dignity Vending Machines, you’re up the bloody creek. So why on earth haven’t period products been a standard in first aid kits before? First aid kits are everywhere. Homes, workplaces, events... but somehow, pads and tampons are left off the list. Which, when you think about it, is wild, because "that" accident happens to half the population all the time. I get why. It’s an oversight. We’ve got centuries of stigma and taboos to shake. Women’s health issues have historically been ignored or sidelined so including something seen as "women's business," for so long in first aid kits would be too obvious. First aid kits are all about treating physical injuries—cuts, scrapes, sprains—while overlooking the fact that managing menstruation is a natural, recurring need for half the population. It’s one of those things that’s not been questioned (until now), even though period products are essential for health, hygiene, and dignity, especially in unexpected situations. Menstruation isn’t considered an emergency or needing first aid care. It’s like hospitals not providing period products to patients. It’s a classic case of an everyday need being left out of the conversation. That’s changing. With the help of St John's Ambulance, who shared the top two most requested items, and their knowledge and insights, here is a first for first aid kits. Enter our ALL accidents Dignity First Aid Kit—because whether it's a cut finger or an unexpected period, you deserve to be covered. Hopefully, from now on, every kit will have what’s needed for all kinds of accidents and every first aid kit comes with period products as standard. Pre-order now - https://lnkd.in/g3MXMpVy

Choking is a serious risk for children, but many incidents can be prevented. Here are five key steps to help keep your child safe during mealtime and play: 1. Supervise Eating: Always watch children while they eat and encourage them to sit down and chew slowly. 2. Age-Appropriate Foods: Serve soft foods cut into small, manageable pieces to minimise choking hazards. 3. Avoid High-Risk Foods: Steer clear of hard candies, nuts, whole grapes, and raw vegetables for younger children. 4. Teach Safe Eating Habits: Educate kids to chew thoroughly and avoid talking with food in their mouths. 5. Keep Small Objects Away: Regularly check play areas for small toys or objects that could pose a choking risk. Additionally, it's essential for parents to familiarize themselves with what to do in case of a choking emergency. Implement these strategies to create a safer environment for your child For expert guidance and top-notch pediatric care, visit Mangalam Hospital. New Delhi. 7 babies were silenced forever due to a fire in a baby care hospital in Vivek Vihar, the capital of the country, Delhi. Delhi Fire Department and local people were successful in rescuing 12 newborns from the hospital, but 7 of them said goodbye to this world before seeing the world. For the hospital management, this may be just an accident, but what was the fault of those 7 newborns? What was the fault of their parents that they are now suffering this unbearable pain? The question arises that who is responsible for this? After this terrible fire, the relatives of the newborns as well as the local administration are in shock. After the fire incident at Baby Care Hospital in Vivek Vihar, East Delhi and the death of 7 newborns, these 5 big questions are arising:- Question number- 1At what time did the fire break out in the Baby Care Hospital and how long after the incident was the fire department informed about it? This is currently a matter of investigation. It is being told that the fire broke out at 11:32 pm on Saturday night and it was brought under control in about 50 minutes. Question number- 2The second big question is that who was present when the fire broke out in the hospital? Were the security guards present at the Baby Care Hospital at the time of the fire or was any responsible person from the hospital management present in the hospital or not? It has not been ascertained yet who was present from the security department of the hospital when the fire broke out in the hospital. Question number- 3The third and most important question is what arrangements were there for fire safety in the Baby Care Hospital? When the fire broke out, were the fire safety measures in place in the hospital adopted or implemented or not? Let us tell you that under the prescribed provisions, complete arrangements have to be made for fire safety in hospitals, so that in case of a fire, the incident can be dealt with. Question number- 4The fourth question that arises is whether the safety standards in hospitals were checked as per the prescribed parameters before the onset of summer or not? Usually in the summer season when the temperature goes above 40 degrees Celsius, the chances of sparks in the machines and fire due to that increases significantly. Before the onset of summer, an attempt is made to know through drills whether all the equipment related to fire safety are working properly or not. Whether the water supply in the pipe is happening properly or not and whether the motor is working properly or not. Along with this, the fire department team also gives them basic training. Delhi: Huge fire in baby care centre, 7 newborns died, 5 admitted in hospital Question number- 5According to initial information, the reason for the fire in the hospital has not been ascertained yet. Was the fire caused by a short circuit or is there some other reason behind it? The real reason will be known only after investigation by the fire department and

Health Tips by Myra More on First Aid Kits Recently, we discussed the necessity of a first aid kit and to know where it is at all times. A friend recently moved, and while the delivery men were bringing in the washer and dryer, one cut his finger badly, enough that it bled on the stairs and the carpet. The new homeowners couldn’t locate the first aid kit, but fortunately, one was in the delivery truck. As I reviewed the previous blog, I realized there are things I missed that need to be available, especially during summer. And things that we need in our homes. 1-chewable aspirin, 81 mg. You NEVER want to take this without a physician’s ( or PA/NP) advice, but if you think you may be having a heart attack, you are often advised to chew aspirin. Keep a small bottle in your home, first aid kit, or purse, and ensure it isn’t expired. 2-Many first aid kits (including the day hiker one I pictured) include some medications, including acetaminophen, antihistamine, and perhaps chewable aspirin. Check the expiration dates (I just realized that our envelope of aspirin EXPIRED in 2017), and keep them current. 3-butterfly bandages. 4-perhaps aloe Vera, if you have a bad sunburn As I have said, you can buy a First Aid Kit pre-made or make your own. Either way, be sure to have one accessible at all times. You never know when you will need it. #Firstaidkit. #beprepared. #patientadvocacy

Heart-rendering scenes have been viewed this past week. Sadly, these incidents aren't new - be they #hospitals, #schools, #Colleges, #residential condos, #offices, #events, etc. This means that we, as a society and industry, need to have a more proactive approach to #Safety in general and #Fire/Electrical Safety, #earthquake, #flood, #rain #risks in particular. Companies frequently outsource, use assets of 3rd-parties, use CRE etc. thereby inescapably limiting their control over Safety whilst #accountability remains the same. Therefore, such companies would better meet their moral and #legal obligations through a #SafetyGovernanceFramework involving periodic #Audits towards #riskmitigation, #Safety, and #Resilience. And this is where MitKat Advisory can significantly help.....
The entire country has been shaken up by a tragic fire at Baby Care New Born Hospital in Vivek Vihar, Delhi, which resulted in the deaths of six newborns. The Delhi health minister has directed all private and state-run hospitals to complete a fire audit by June 8 and submit a compliance report to the health department. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), said in its findings that: - Emergency exits were absent in the building - Fire extinguishers were non-functional - There was a lack of operational fire alarms - No water sprinkler systems in the hospital The report, which was shared with the Lieutenant-Governor and the Police Commissioner, highlighted the lack of preparedness and safety compliance at the nursing home. The commission also noted that residents of the area, not the hospital staff, had reported the fire, indicating “a severe lack of emergency training” of the medical facility’s employees. Key measures announced include: - New Fire Safety Rules: All hospitals, regardless of their height or number of floors, must have comprehensive fire safety arrangements. - Inspections: Chief district medical officers will conduct random inspections of all private hospitals and nursing homes. - Bravery Awards: Two nurses and five citizens will be recommended for bravery awards for their heroic efforts in rescuing babies. - Compensation: Expedited compensation for the grieving families. This incident underscores the urgent need for stringent fire safety protocols and adherence to regulatory requirements. Take Action Now: Ensure your hospital or healthcare facility is compliant with fire safety regulations.
