🚨 The French government has just presented the 3rd Multiannual Energy Plan and the 3rd National Low-Carbon Strategy, in which nuclear development plays a significant role. These plans confirm the intent to maintain the existing nuclear fleet while increasing capacity, leading to higher fuel demand and a direct impact on enrichment, assembly, and reprocessing infrastructure. 🎙️ In this new episode of Switch On, dedicated to the nuclear fuel cycle, Anne-Charlotte Dagorn hosts Thomas Branche, Executive Vice President of France New Nuclear and Energy, and Olivier VINCENT, Development Director at Assystem, to discuss the key challenges ahead: 🌍 Sovereignty and geopolitics: new alliances and sources of uranium supply. 🏗️ Aging infrastructure: extending their lifespan and anticipating the needs of next-generation reactors (SMRs and AMRs). 💻 Digitalisation: leveraging digital tools to support the success of these major projects. Conflicting trends for nuclear power in the United States emerged in 2023. Among the positives was the completion last July, after years of delay, of Vogtle 3, the first built-from-scratch nuclear unit constructed in the United States in decades. At the COP 28 climate conference in Dubai, the United States was one of 22 signatories to a declaration that recognized the “key role” of nuclear energy in achieving net zero climate emissions. The declaration established an “aspirational” goal of tripling world nuclear capacity by 2050. Nuclear power now has a prominent seat at the climate roundtable. States across the U.S. are increasingly turning to advanced nuclear technology as a critical component of their energy strategies. Wyoming, Virginia, and Michigan are at the forefront, driving significant progress in the adoption and deployment of nuclear technologies. Wyoming is particularly notable, with plans to begin construction on TerraPower's reactor this summer, which is anticipated to be the first commercial advanced nuclear facility in the country. Michigan and Virginia are also making bold moves, with Michigan restarting the Palisades station and Virginia exploring deployments near decommissioned mines. These states exemplify how policy innovation and substantial investments can accelerate the transition to advanced nuclear power. ✳ The nuclear industry launches the manifesto for the new EU mandate, and #WalterTosto is among the signatories! VP Nuclear & Big Science, Massimiliano Tacconelli, was present along with representatives of the european nuclear industry at the presentation of the manifesto, which invites the new European Commission to recognize nuclear energy as a key solution to the EU's challenges: climate change, affordable and accessible energy, and security of supply. Yves Desbazeille, director general of nucleareurope, underlined the need for the next Commission to treat #nuclearpower on par with other fossil-free technologies, focusing on objectives such as #decarbonisation, competitiveness, and energy sovereignty. The manifesto asks for: ▪ Equal treatment of all zero-impact technologies ▪ Consistent policies to facilitate nuclear deployment ▪ Access to EU #nuclear funding and financing ▪ Inclusion of the nuclear fuel cycle in the taxonomy of #sustainable finance ▪ Support for #innovative nuclear technologies and a skilled nuclear workforce

🚀 Breakthrough in Nuclear Safety: China’s Meltdown-Proof Reactor I firmly believe nuclear energy is a must in a clean energy future. That's why it was exciting for me to recently read that China made history with the development of the world's first nuclear reactor designed to be completely meltdown-proof—the High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor Pebble-Bed Module (HTR-PM). Located at the Shidaowan nuclear power plant, this innovative reactor began commercial operations in December 2023 and marks a significant advancement in nuclear safety. Key features of the HTR-PM include: 🚀Passive Cooling System: Utilizes a pebble-bed design that cools itself without external power, slowing the fission reaction and reducing heat. 🚀Natural Heat Dissipation: The reactor can naturally dissipate heat during shutdowns, reducing nuclear reactions without active intervention. 🚀Commercial Scale: The HTR-PM is the first of its kind to be operational at a commercial scale, generating 105 MW per unit. This development could redefine nuclear safety standards worldwide. https://lnkd.in/eb3ryKT8 #NuclearEnergy #SafetyInnovation #EnergyNews #GlobalEnergy #EMPower

Earlier this summer, I sat down with Adam Daifallah from Teneo for a wide-ranging discussion on nuclear power and how I, as the leader of our Nuclear sector at AtkinsRéalis, am thinking about our place in the industry’s future. As an engineering services and nuclear company with a vision to enhance the way we are all housed, connected, powered, and protected, our role will be a significant one. In the first of our “How Nuclear is #EngineeringABetterFuture” series, I talk about the genesis of the nuclear market for 1,000 new reactors — what we call a “supercycle”. Between 80-85% of the world’s electricity is still produced by fossil fuels. That statistic is incompatible with aspirations of clean grids, and a Net Zero world. So, it will have to change over the next 25 years. Last December, over 20 countries took an important first step to begin working toward the change needed by agreeing to triple nuclear power on their grids by 2050. This ambitious target will ensure that moving away from health-harming sources of power does not reduce their grid’s affordability, or effectiveness. #EngineeringABetterFuture #NetZeroNeedsNuclear
