🏙️ Just as skyscrapers and 𝗺𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸 foundations, 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 foundations. 📊 At the recent GoTech World event, I had the opportunity to attend a very engaging presentation by Hans Teuben, Director of Strategy and Innovation for Public Sector / Smart Cities and Mobility. His arguments for the role of digital twins in cities were compelling and hard to contradict. 💡 🌐 Digital twins are advanced virtual replicas of cities, enabling real-time simulations and predictions for phenomenon like air quality dynamics, flooding, traffic and more. By harnessing vast amounts of data—big data and real-time modeling—these systems empower authorities and cities to make smarter decisions and enhance citizens' quality of life in ways previously unimaginable. 🚦🌳🌊 At the end of the presentation, I think all the 𝗕𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀 in the audience were left both perplexed and wondering🤔: what if we could have a 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁? Imagine urban planning based on this powerful tool, with authorities simulating the impact of various decisions and future projects 🏢🏗️🏦 on citizens' lives. Each line represents countless journeys, showing how air travel brings people closer together every day. How It Was Made: Using R, ggraph, and sf, I overlaid flight routes on a dark map of the US, inspired by the work of Milos Popovic, PhD, who brilliantly maps complex maps. Why This Map?
