Where's the Update? ____ The quarter ended last week. Have you sent out your investor update yet? The vast majority of founders we back at PHX Ventures are great at this, but if you are a startup founder and you have chosen to take money from an investor - any investor - you owe them some form of regular update. It doesn't have to be much but it has to be something. Here are 4 tips on what makes a great investor update from my perspective: 1 - Consistency. Be consistent with key metrics; put them front and center. Be consistent with cadence - monthly for early-stage companies and quarterly for later stage. Be consistent with the format; bullets and graphs are best. 2. Highlights. Don't oversell but briefly highlight customer wins, new hires, product releases, key metrics, and any relevant market developments. Investors want to see what you are doing with their money. 3. Lowlights. Everyone likes good news but don't be afraid to disclose the things you are concerned about. Disclosing bad news builds trust, especially when you communicate how are you addressing the problems. 4. Asks. Make an ask in every investor update. You can't activate your investors if you don't ask for help. Your investors know there will be needs and problems and they want to help. Keeping your investors updated on the progress of your startup - the good, the bad, the ugly - is not just a good thing to do. It's what you signed up for when you took investor money. Updates can also be a powerful tool to activate and mobilize your investors in ways that can help your startup win. ____ #saas #b2b #founder #vc

VCs see their fair share of exciting startups. But how do we separate the future unicorns from the... well, ponies with party hats? 🦄 It all comes down to rigorous #duediligence. By the time of a Series A round, a company is expected to have a proven product-market fit, some level of revenue, and operational traction. Compared to earlier rounds, the focus shifts from potential to performance and execution.   So expect to report on what you were bragging about during your pitch – in particular: 1. Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR) Growth: is it strong and consistent? 2. Net Dollar Retention: how's your ability to retain and expand revenue from your existing customer base? 3. Customer Acquisition Costs (CAC): how much does it take to acquire a new customer and how long does it take to make that same amount back as revenue (payback period)? 4. Burn Rate: can you demonstrate efficient cash flow management and a clear path to profitability? 5. Product Metrics: Depending on your business model, key product usage metrics like active users, engagement, retention, and conversion rates will be crucial. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
