Currently watching Nicola Douglas deliver a thought-provoking masterclass on the intersections of mental health, substance use, and domestic abuse. She's tackling a critical question for practitioners: While mental health challenges and substance use don't always lead to domestic abuse, and addressing those challenges doesn't always resolve coercive control - how can we as professionals effectively work with parents experiencing multiple difficulties that may or may not contribute to abuse and child neglect? Important insights for anyone working with families facing complex challenges. #ProfessionalDevelopment #ChildProtection #DomesticAbuse #MentalHealth #SubstanceUse #DomesticAbuseInformed #Safeandtogether #CCCNAEU24

This is one of my keynotes for this fully virtual event. I hope to see you there! Title; Coercive Control and Children: How the Safe & Together Model Brings It Alive in Practice For almost two decades, the Safe & Together Model has been using the concept of coercive control to improve assessments of perpetrator’s patterns of behavior. Instead of a limited focus on physical violence, the Safe & Together Model embraces the understanding that the robust and more comprehensive concept of coercive control offers one of the best ways to understand how domestic violence perpetrators create danger & harm for adult and child survivors. This workshop session will dive into the concept of coercive control, how it shapes the Safe & Together Model and how to use the concept to improve your practice.
The 'Coercive Control & Children' conference is coming Dec 3-5, 2024! 🌍 Today is World Mental Health Day, and at iRaise Girls & Boys International, we’re committed to raising awareness about the mental health crisis affecting our communities, especially our youth. 🧠 Did you know that 1 in 5 children and adolescents experience mental health challenges, yet nearly 60% of them don’t receive the support they need? In underserved communities, these numbers are even higher due to lack of access to quality care. At iRaise, we believe that every child deserves the tools and resources to thrive emotionally and mentally. That’s why we’re dedicated to providing mental health services and creating safe spaces for youth to express themselves, heal, and grow. Let’s break the stigma, advocate for better mental health support, and continue to show up for the future of our children. 💚 #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthMatters #SupportOurYouth #BreakTheStigma #iRaiseGirlsAndBoysInternational

May, recognized as #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, provides a platform to spotlight the unique challenges faced by survivors at the intersection of #mentalhealth and #domesticviolence. According to The Network: Advocating Against Domestic Violence latest Measuring Safety report, in 2023, there were 2,010 requests for counseling services made across Illinois, a 24% increase from the previous year. In #Chicago, there were 660 requests, marking an increase of 6% from last year. During Mental Health Awareness Month, we have an opportunity to amplify the necessity for increased awareness and support for survivors, highlighting the enduring impact of domestic violence on mental health, where the scars, both seen and unseen, can linger long after the physical wounds have healed. #preventdomesticviolence

On International Day of Families, we recognize the diverse and complex nature of families and their vital role in promoting mental health and well-being. Families come in many forms, each with its unique dynamics and challenges. This day serves as a reminder of the supportive role families play in each other's lives, providing love, care, and stability. At OAMHP, we understand that navigating family dynamics can be challenging for many individuals. We recognize that there is a diversity of approaches needed to meet the mental health needs both within families and as a result of complex family situations. And we have members who can offer support, guidance, and therapy to help individuals and families navigate these complexities. Whether you're facing communication issues, relationship struggles, or other family-related concerns, mental health professionals are here to help. This Mental Health Awareness Week has taken on new significance for me. This morning, on my way to work, I witnessed someone in a moment of crisis and dialed 101. Initially, the authorities had deemed the first call from someone else as non-urgent, but my follow-up call escalated the response. It's a crucial reminder: never assume someone else will call the police. If you see someone in crisis, pick up the phone and dial 101 to speak to your local police department. Your call can make a difference. #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #CrisisIntervention #CommunitySupport #EndTheStigma #BeTheChange
