Funding cuts have affected dozens of projects, with significant reductions in many others. It is essential to maintain the mechanism for aid delivery across borders, keeping it insulated from international interests and political decisions, to ensure the survival of millions of lives.

“This unique language permits the expression of contradictory ideas without the burden of accountability.” In this article, translated by and also published on the Syria Report website, Mazen Ezzi analyses how the regime, opposition groups, donors and NGOs each interpret “early recovery” to suit their agenda – and how this threatens the rights of vulnerable groups, blurring the lines between humanitarian aid and reconstruction. Are we seeing a pragmatic solution to help Syrians, or a compromise that sidesteps political reform? To find out more, read the full article here: https://bit.ly/3BhgVJH #earlyrecovery #syria

Escalation of violence will benefit no one, but will lead to immense suffering for civilians. In line with our repeated calls, most recently during Sunday’s @UN Security Council emergency meeting, #Malta reiterates need for restraint by all parties in the #MiddleEast is paramount. During #today’s @EU_Commission extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council meeting, we discussed rising insecurity and instability in Middle East. The recent incidents involving Iran and Israel raise very serious concerns – the escalation of this conflict is wholly unacceptable. Also affirmed that latest developments should not divert our attention from dire humanitarian situation in #Gaza and suffering of hostages and their families – a permanent ceasefire, release of all hostages and significantly increased access to humanitarian aid are urgent first steps to get back on the road to #peace.

My op-ed in The Independent on the #urgent need to end the #war in #gaza, free all the #hostages, get all the #humanitarian #aid necessary by opening all #land #crossings. Clarity on the #exit #strategy is necessary in order to secure not only the safety of #Palestinians and #Israelis, but of the entire #MiddleEast and beyond. We are at a #tippingpoint. #israelhamaswar #gaza #humanitarianaid #humanityfirst #endthewar #hostages #tippingpoint
The US has made it clear it no longer trusts Israel’s actions in Gaza. The only way to get humanitarian aid in is with an immediate ceasefire, writes Associate Fellow Nomi Bar-Yaacov for The Independent. https://lnkd.in/esqQD82u

From Gaza to Sudan to Haiti to Ukraine, humanitarian workers face more lethal risks, operational challenges, and access constraints than ever before. According to the UN, 2023 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers with 280 aid workers killed last year alone. 2024 is on track to be even worse. We are seeing a blatant disregard for 75 years of International Humanitarian Law that is eroding the foundation of our collective humanity. Today, on #WorldHumanitarianDay, we mourn and honor the brave individuals who continue their life-saving work in perilous conditions and make the ultimate sacrifice, and we demand action to protect aid workers, civilians, and civilian infrastructure under assault. It’s time for those in power to end impunity and #ActForHumanity.

As the conflict in Gaza continues to claim innocent lives, the moral superiority of the West has been brought into question. The killing of seven World Central Kitchen foreign aid workers in April has prompted many Western nations to begin reconsidering their support for Israel. Tom Lowe’s article argues the contrast between the Western response to the deaths of 33,000 Palestinians during the conflict and that of the attacks on foreign aid workers highlights the “astounding” hypocrisy of the West’s position. Lowe explores how the attack in April has begun to shift attitudes among Western leaders but argues their rhetoric is useless unless supported by concrete action. The article looks at the current state of the Israel-Gaza conflict and the horrendous attacks on World Central Kitchen foreign aid workers in April, killing seven. Lowe examines the West’s response to the attacks and the conclusions of the Israeli investigation. Lowe argues a permanent and lasting ceasefire is the only viable solution to protect innocent Palestinian and Israeli lives. https://lnkd.in/eYeJ958V #Israel #Palestine #Gaza #politics

A new chapter unfolds in Syria! After years of displacement, Syrian refugees are lining up at the Turkish border, hopeful to return home following the fall of Assad's regime. The Syrian Civil War, which began in 2011, has left an estimated 6.7 million people internally displaced and 5.6 million seeking refuge in neighboring countries. The conflict has caused unimaginable suffering, destruction, and loss of life. The recent overthrow of Assad's regime, led by Abu Mohammad al-Jolani's Hayat Tahir al-Sham (HTS), marks a significant turning point in the conflict. As the dust settles, the international community is watching closely to see how the new landscape will unfold. With talks of a new government's already in the pipeline, the return of refugees is a crucial step towards rebuilding and reconciliation. #Syria #Refugees #AssadRegime #HTS #Turkiye

Today is World Humanitarian Day and this year it is particularly somber. Last year was the deadliest year on record for humanitarians – over 280 killed – and 2024 is on track to be even worse as aid workers from Gaza to Sudan to Haiti to Ukraine face more lethal risks, operational challenges, and access constraints than ever before. We’re seeing a blatant disregard for 75 years of International Humanitarian Law that is eroding the foundation of our collective humanity. We’ve all witnessed the systematic blocking of aid and attacks on civilian infrastructure including healthcare centers, aid convoys, ambulances, schools, and shelters. The world has reached a perilous tipping point where the safe delivery of humanitarian aid is no longer guaranteed and civilians most in need are the ones who suffer. It’s time for those in power to end impunity and act for humanity. #WHD #ActforHumanity
