#RecommendedReading The Back from the Brink report by CSE has Amrtha Kasturi Rangan, Head of our Rural Development vertical feeling optimistic about the way government, communities and civil society organizations are working together to bring water to all Indians! Find out why, below! “Experts are ringing the alarm bells on India’s water crisis, the latest being the warning from Moody’s. We must heed the warning that water scarcity can have far reaching impacts on our economy. However, the recently launched CSE report “Back from the Brink” highlights that there is still hope! We are happy to see the Gaalmukt Dharan Gaalyukt Shivar (GDGS) scheme of the Government of Maharashtra, with which we have a long-standing engagement, as a part of the report! At the same time, I believe a lot more can be done nation-wide to help create distributed, local and sustainable water sources. For instance, the First Census of Water Bodies documents that of the 24 lakh water bodies in the country, around 45% have never been repaired. There is an urgent need to scale the best practices captured in the CSE report and rejuvenate water bodies across the country. Doing it via the Rejuvenation of Waterbodies model will help ensure it is community-centric with optimal silt usage. The cost- and time -efficiency of the model can materially increase the number of water bodies we can tackle per year. Link to the report:https://lnkd.in/dkYZM5hz

#newrelease Glad to share that my publication on"Enabling circular economy in used water management in India", was released at Spring Water Summit 2024, organised by #IndoNordicWaterforum. The study develops and computes a first-of-its-kind municipal index for evaluating the performance of Indian urban local bodies (ULBs) in used water management. ULBs, at the heart of managing urban domestic used water, are the focus of the index. It covers more than 500 ULBs across 10 states. This report seeks to provide an overarching framework for developing a dynamic inventory for used water management at the ULB level. It would also serve as a ready reference for different stakeholders ranging from local authorities and state governments to private players by allowing them to make rational and informed decisions on prioritizing their strategies and avenues for investment, which would strengthen the used water management ecosystem in India through participatory management and promoting resource efficiency by adopting circular economy approach, which is now no more an option but a need of hour. So I leave you with a quote, which I recently came across. "Waste – isn't waste until we waste it, and we have lost that luxury a long way back". Do give a read: https://lnkd.in/gPvEdvx8 I would also like to congratulate my co-authors Saiba Gupta, Ayushi Kashyap, and Nitin Bassi for putting so much effort in developing this insightful and much relevant knowledge product. #wastewatermanagement #usedwatermanagement #circulareconomy #sdg6

New Research #Publication Alert! 📚💧 I am excited to share the publication of our latest research article on #water #policy, which significantly contributes to the understanding and management of the global #urban #water #cycle. At a time when cities worldwide, especially in India, are grappling with increasing #water #scarcity due to rapid urbanization and suboptimal water management practices, this study is more pertinent than ever. This article is featured in the #special #issue on "Circular Economy Policies for Water and Wastewater" in the #WaterPolicy journal, spotlighting innovative solutions to critical water management challenges. Link to full article (open access) here: https://lnkd.in/dkpFuzfS Highlights of Our Study: Regional Focus: Our research centers on the #PimpriChinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) in #India, offering a novel methodology to prioritize the 5Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Reclaim, Restore) and can be adapted globally for any other region. Innovative Approach: This study in the water sector prioritizes Circular Economy (CE) strategies for efficient implementation, introducing the improved Water Circularity Indicator, WCI-2.0. Decision-Making Tool: Our developed indicator, WCI-2.0, aids decision-makers in prioritizing CE strategies, leading to the effective allocation of funds and resources for water infrastructure. Policy Impact: Our findings provide actionable insights to help utilities achieve urban water balance and inform policy decisions, enhancing water system efficiency and contributing to global efforts to mitigate water crises. This article builds upon our previous work, accessible using this link: https://lnkd.in/dt-2DEYC I extend my deepest gratitude to my supervisor, Prof. Pradip Kalbar, whose profound insights and passionate commitment to enhancing the water sector in India have significantly shaped the outcome of this research. His practical understanding of the sector and visionary approach were instrumental in guiding this work to fruition. #WaterManagement #UrbanPlanning #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #ResearchImpact #GlobalWaterCrisis #AcademicPublishing #PhDLife

With the support of our partners, the Third Planet Foundation is on a mission to harvest more than 100 crore litres of water in the coming months. We are implementing CSR programs related to Water Conservation in different parts of India. The program focuses on sustainable rainwater harvesting techniques to address the water-scarce situation by reviving failed and low-yielding borewells in the communities. The Bore Charger, an innovative, patented rainwater harvesting technique, play a crucial role in our Water Conservation programs. This technique 'perforates' impervious PVC or MS Steel casing pipe at Hydrogeological Appropriate depth from inside using a robotic arm. With this program, we aim to achieve an average annual water harvest of 10 Crore Litres per borewell, a significant step towards sustainable water management. We invite socially responsible organisations to join our mission to amplify the efforts and impact of the much-needed water conservation and environmental sustainability initiatives. #corporatesocialresponsibility #csr #csrindia #waterconservation #waterharvesting #groundwater #india #socialinvestment #impactinvesting #socialimpact #rainwaterharvesting #farmers #sustainability #sustainable #hydrogeology #environmentsustainability #waterislife #water #esg #sdgs #sdg13 #sdg6 #waterconservationtechnology #bangalorewatercrisis #bangalore #watercrisis #water #cleanwater #savewater #climatechange #waterscarcity #climatecrisis #globalwarming #watermanagement #safewater

This World Water Day, we are reminded that water is a force for peace, yet its scarcity and mismanagement can lead to conflicts. With over 3 billion people dependent on international waters, the call for global cooperation has never been louder. At BMT, we are committed to turning the tide on water challenges, drawing from our vast maritime sector experience. Through our 'BMT Giveback' initiative, we have embarked on projects that directly impact water accessibility and quality – from revolutionising sanitation in Gujarat, India, to empowering Indigenous Australian communities with water management skills. Our work emphasises the essential human right to clean, safe water and our commitment to creating sustainable engineering solutions. If you want to learn more about our approach to sustainability, click here: https://bit.ly/3ILbBik We would love to hear your ideas on how water can create peace and stop conflicts. Please share them in the comments. #WorldWaterDay #Sustainability #MaritimeSector

Water scarcity is one of the most pressing global environmental issues we face today. In an effort to promote sustainable water management, numerous innovative and regulatory water conservation programs have emerged across the globe. Conducting a water audit allows a company to identify inefficiencies, reduce water wastage, and better understand their water usage patterns. Our Centre assists you in creating comprehensive reports that reflect your commitment to sustainability, responsible business practices, and adherence to India's water conservation goals. Understanding the water footprint of a company's operations is fundamental for developing a successful water management strategy. This is an integral part of the company's broader sustainability strategy. It's important to note that as per the Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) notification, All industries abstracting ground water in excess shall be required to undertake water audit. Together, we can shape a more sustainable, responsible, and profitable future for your organization and contribute to India's vision for a water-secure and sustainable economy.
