According to the just-released “POV Reimagined: Women in Cybersecurity” research report from The FQ and Deloitte, cybersecurity is one of the most relevant global industries for women because it offers job security, opportunities for skill development, and a sense of purpose. So why are women still underrepresented in the industry? Our research shows that 70% of working women believe that to be in cybersecurity they must have proficient technical skills, yet many people succeed without computer hardware or software expertise. With the soaring demand for talent, it’s time to turn this around. Join us in the #EqualityLounge at #AWNewYork24 as we share the revealing data on what’s holding women back, and the actionable insights of how to close the gender gap in cybersecurity. • Shelley Zalis, CEO, The Female Quotient • Emily Mossburg, Principal, Global Cyber Leader, Deloitte

It’s no secret that women are underrepresented across the technology industry. Women make up only 25% of the cybersecurity field globally. This is a dismal number. Our recent research, conducted by The Female Quotient and Deloitte, found that 50% of young working women lack sufficient knowledge of cybersecurity as a field of employment. There is a clear disconnect between what women perceive a career in the cyber industry to be and the reality. Why does this matter? The general lack of awareness is contributing to the lack of female representation in cybersecurity career roles. And having #cybersecurity at the heart of an organization’s strategy is crucial, requiring diverse thinkers. The Female Quotient and Deloitte aim to change this by highlighting trailblazing women in cyber, sharing their advice to get more women excited about cyber. Stay tuned for our full research report coming in September 2024. Thank you Kode With Klossy for leading the way, inspiring and teaching girls in #tech! Not only is cybersecurity an industry that isn't very well understood (especially by those of us who rely on it to protect our wellbeing), but it's an industry rife with misconceptions about who gets to work in it. I'm SO excited for content like this that breaks through the assumptions and misconceptions of #cybersecurity and industries like it. Great job Deloitte & The Female Quotient for putting names and faces to real people driving impact. An aside: Working with my clients in cyber and risk management, their number one complaint is that they feel misunderstood by their prospects... that people don't understand the need for cybersecurity solutions, they underestimate the consequences of lacking preparedness, and when it becomes important, it's often too late. I think that part of those misconceptions stem from a lack of stories that can add context and color around the importance of the industry, the humans behind the screens, and how real lives are affected by the work done by people protecting us without us even being aware of it!

It’s no secret that women are underrepresented across the technology industry, including cybersecurity. In fact, women make up only 25% of the cybersecurity field globally. With the rise of cybersecurity threats, the industry is booming. At its current rate, the cybersecurity sector is projected to surpass a global revenue of $657 billion by 2030. Now, more than ever, having #cybersecurity at the heart of an organization’s strategy is crucial, and requiring diverse thinkers. There is more opportunity, and necessity, for women to break into the field than ever before. But what discourages women from entering into cybersecurity? Early findings from our new research, conducted by The Female Quotient and Deloitte, show that 50% of young working women lack sufficient knowledge of cybersecurity as a field of employment. It’s time to educate, empower, and convey that the cyber industry isn’t only about technical skills, but the equally important “soft skills” like communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and attention to detail. Stay tuned for more findings from our report in September 2024. The Female Quotient and Deloitte are amplifying the voices of women and girls at the forefront of tech and cyber. The women in this community are the best in their field, working at the highest levels to innovate, safeguard, and lead complex programs at some of the biggest companies in the world. While I do not agree with some of the recommendations as a female path to a career in tech or cybersecurity, this article offers many examples of groups and organizations that have dedicated resources to women in the field. You should consider looking into those.

On world book day my usual stack of fiction has Crimedotcom on the top of the ever growing pile, as I am currently studying Cybersecurity with the support of my employer Three Ireland via UCD. As I always say to my two little bookworms you can never be bored when you have a book in your hand and they went off to school this morning with Harry Potter and Diary of a wimpy kid for a day of fun and reading. How lucky are they! As I upskill and delve deeper as part of my studies in Cybersecurity this field is certainly widening my eyes to the level of ever increasing threat to business. With International women's day tomorrow the irony of studying cybersecurity in a heavily male dominated field isn't lost on me with business struggling to fill positions with women currently working in only 24% of the roles. Diversity is Security is the message from Cyber Women in Ireland and with mentorship, employer support for women in business this gender gap will hopefully close year on year. #worldbookday #cybersecurity #iwd2024

Louise Hanna, Partner – Advisory, shares her insights with CEO Magazine on the importance of appealing to women to consider careers in cybersecurity. Colleague Heidi Mejia is one inspirational example of a successful career pivot into cybersecurity. “Hiring women is key to helping our nation overcome a significant labor shortage that is estimated to reach a shortfall of 30,000 workers by 2026. If we fail to attract a future pipeline of women to join the fight to protect our nation and fill rapidly expanding vacancies across all sectors, we will continue to see the escalation of cyberattacks at an alarming velocity.” To understand and catch cybercriminals, the key lies in hiring more women.
