💡 Tips Tuesday: Moving With Kids Making a move isn't easy on anyone, but kids who've only known one home can have a tougher time with the transition. Check out our top 4 tips on making the process easier. ✔️ Get kids involved: When your children are involved in the moving process they tend to take ownership and feel excited about the move. Have your kids help with age-appropriate tasks like packing their toys, setting up a yard sale, or choosing paint colours for the new house. ✔️ Visit the new neighborhood: Take a tour of the new neighborhood. Drive around the block, show your child the route they would take to get to school and check out that awesome new park nearby! If it’s too far for a visit, show them photos of the new home and neighborhood. ✔️ Create a moving day bag: Fill a backpack with fun toys and activities to entertain your little one during moving day. This will also give them a safe place to keep their special belongings like their favourite stuffed animal. ✔️ Say Goodbye: Before your moving day, have a goodbye party with friends and neighbours. When the time is right, take time with your child to visit every room in the house they are leaving to say goodbye. Reflect on the memories and talk about the exciting new memories they will get to make at the new house. #tipstuesday #movingwithkids #moving #family #realestate #moving #southerngeorgianbay #teamhawke

Without being an Urban Planner many can appreciate the fundamentals of a healthy, walkable, engaged community through Halloween. Spooky as it may be the pursuit of full-size candy bags is often the community we are looking to design for. In 2019 Strong Towns posted this ( https://lnkd.in/gkyqBqd7 ) summarizing their 'trick or treat test': 1. Lots of doors 2. Doors you can find 3. Comfortable sidewalk 4. Small setbacks 5. Porches or stoops 6. Well-connected streets (some of the links within the article seems to have gone dead within, but the discussion is in there) I am up for discussion on the details of some of that list, as any good planning exercise would deserve. At the very least when considering that list I add: 7. A mix of housing types If every house has kids the outcome is bowls on the porches as parents are all out shepherding the kids around - hopefully at least in the community - a range of families ensures there are plenty of houses with their lights on. 8. Safe drivers Where there are kids running around, there are more kids running around. The right land use falls down on behavior in the transportation system. if the road feels dangerous, it is not going to work. The fact that Halloween is the most dangerous night of the year for kids ( https://lnkd.in/gVhEVMAQ ) speaks to darkness, excited children, and vehicles driving to busier trick or treating communities. Fundamentally, speed and mass are critical to the outcome of a collision, drive defensively and with your neighbourhood in mind. Would you add others?

Moving from a condo in Toronto to a house in the suburbs is a big step, especially when you're planning for kids and pets. 🐶👶 So, what makes a neighborhood great for both? Great News for Sharon's Bay Park in New Lenox Governor Pritzker announced the 2025 OSLAD Grant award recipients in December, totaling $55.2 million. The New Lenox Community Park District (NLCPD) received $600,000 to renovate Sharon’s Bay Park. NLCPD is proud to be one of only two park districts in Will County to receive this substantial grant. The redevelopment plan includes creating three modern play zones tailored to various age groups, ensuring fun and safe recreational opportunities for children, teens, and families. The renovation also features a high school regulation basketball court, an upgraded volleyball court, and the addition of the innovative “Tween Central Social Hub,” designed with fitness equipment and social spaces for local tweens. The renovation also incorporates shoreline enhancements, beautifying the park and serving as a resource for environmental education. These improvements will create a welcoming space for ADA-accessible fishing and nature appreciation, fostering a deeper connection to the environment for park visitors. #expertsatplay, #designexcellence, #parks, #recreation, #recreationlandscape, #newlenox, #illinoisparks, #greenspace, #outdoors

Seeing the Princess of Wales' children running through woodlands, jumping over streams and dodging the waves this week in the video she released* reminded me of a report from Redrow earlier this year. Children need space to run and play. Now, I know that not all children will have the same access to the great outdoors as Kate's kids. But all children should have SOME access to green spaces and safe routes to get there. The report (link in the comments) found: 🏞 1/3 of families have no outdoor play areas or nature spaces within safe walking distance. 🚘 2 in 5 parents say their children can't play outdoors alone because there are no safe routes. 😰 52% of parents worry about safety, cutting down outdoor play. Instead, 68% of children are watching TV and 53% are playing video games. But: 💤 47% say their child sleeps better after outdoor play. 📱 37% report less screen dependency. 😌 35% see calmer behaviour. Anyone who knows Horgan Homes knows we design our developments to make sure our luxury builds don't have handkerchief lawns. In fact, our planting design and use of outside space at Manor Gardens in the Clent Hills was a key factor in us scooping the WhatHouse Awards Best Small Housebuilder in the UK last year. So how can we encourage other developers, and indeed local authorities, to make sure there's enough open green space, playgrounds and safe ways to get to the park in the future? Of all the problems in this world which need fixing, this is surely one of the easiest? 🤷♀️ (*And good to see HRH looking so well. I've no doubt that the great outdoors has helped play a role in her recovery too!)

🛠 Improving Sidewalk Safety Throughout Upland 🛠 As part of the Sidewalk Repair Master Plan, our Public Works team is addressing minor trip-and-fall hazards around parks and City-owned properties. These efforts support California's Safe Routes to School initiative and ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)—helping create safe, accessible pathways for all residents and visitors. 🌳🚶♀️♿ Why Sidewalk Grinding? Sidewalk grinding is a practical and cost-effective maintenance solution for addressing minor height variations caused by factors like tree roots or soil shifts. This method not only improves safety but also extends the life of our sidewalks, offering a low-cost alternative to full replacement. We’re grateful for the patience of our community during these repairs and for those who continue to report hazards through the City’s app. This collaboration allows us to respond more quickly and efficiently, making Upland safer for everyone. 📲 See something? Say something! Hazards can be reported directly to Public Works through our app. Together, we’re enhancing accessibility and keeping Upland a community we’re all proud to call home. #UplandPublicWorks #ADACompliance #SafeRoutes #CommunityPartnership #TeamUpland #ThankYou
