As a neurodivergent individual, I have to recognize that I can't be and do everything. There are ceilings and limitations whether I want it or not and organizations need to be focusing on what can be instead of what should be. Working with persons with disabilities needs to be well-thought off. In addition to hiring, one needs to prepare the workforce the person is being hired into. Because each disability is different, a system of inclusive leadership centered around listening, empathy, constant upstanding and taking action needs to be built. On International Day of People with Disability, we reflect on the ongoing inequalities and neglect many individuals with disabilities experience. Andy Hamilton SJ stresses the importance of ensuring people with disability can exercise agency in their lives. While challenges persist, such as inaccessible spaces and systemic prejudice, a just society must address these imbalances by fostering equal opportunities in education, employment and social life. This year’s theme, "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future," calls us to listen to and support their voices, working together toward a more equitable society for all. If you'll allow me to add that this weak implementation also applies to international #NGO or local #CSO, who often have the policies but don't know how to implement inclusive programming. And thus fail to adhere to their own principles (e.g. #leavenoonebehind #CRPD Art. 11 and 32). #inclusion #SDG #Agenda2030
In this opinion piece I argue that good laws have not translated into better life for persons with disabilities in the African continent. I recently attended a conference by the AFRICAN DISABILITY FORUM (ADF) and among the remarkable things discussed is the recent coming into force of the African Disability Protocol (ADP). Adopted in January 2018, the ADP officially entered into force on 5th June 2024, following its 15th ratification on 5th May 2024. The ADP offers a framework to safeguard the human rights of persons with disabilities on the continent. The continent is home to more than 80 million people with diverse disabilities who are confronted with diverse barriers to their inclusion in communities. ‘We have good laws but little implementation,’ is a sentiment that was echoed by many delegates from across different countries. Today, December 3, 2024: International Day of Persons with Disabilities This year’s theme, "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future," reminds us of the invaluable contributions that individuals with disabilities make in shaping a better world. 💪 As highlighted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, persons with disabilities often face the greatest challenges in times of global crisis but are too often excluded from creating solutions. Let’s change that by empowering their voices and leadership in our communities. At the same time, we’re also celebrating UK Disability History Month, a time to reflect on the strides made toward equality and the work still needed to break down barriers. Together, these observances inspire action for inclusion, respect, and opportunity for all. #IDPD2024
