Today, on International Day of People with Disability, we recognise the 5.5 million Australians living with disabilities and all the ways they enrich our lives and communities. It’s a day that aims to promote community awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. The theme for IDPwD 2024 is "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future." This theme is about people with disability as leaders. Leaders with disability make the world a fairer place for everyone. As a neurodivergent individual, I have to recognize that I can't be and do everything. There are ceilings and limitations whether I want it or not and organizations need to be focusing on what can be instead of what should be. Working with persons with disabilities needs to be well-thought off. In addition to hiring, one needs to prepare the workforce the person is being hired into. Because each disability is different, a system of inclusive leadership centered around listening, empathy, constant upstanding and taking action needs to be built. On International Day of People with Disability, we reflect on the ongoing inequalities and neglect many individuals with disabilities experience. Andy Hamilton SJ stresses the importance of ensuring people with disability can exercise agency in their lives. While challenges persist, such as inaccessible spaces and systemic prejudice, a just society must address these imbalances by fostering equal opportunities in education, employment and social life. If you'll allow me to add that this weak implementation also applies to international #NGO or local #CSO, who often have the policies but don't know how to implement inclusive programming. And thus fail to adhere to their own principles (e.g. #leavenoonebehind #CRPD Art. 11 and 32). #inclusion #SDG #Agenda2030
