When we facilitate health convenings with communities throughout the country, nearly half say that food insecurity is their main concern. And summer can be one of the hardest seasons for children experiencing hunger. During summer months, school meals aren’t available, it can be hard for families to travel to access free meal programs, and food banks may simply not have enough of or the right kind of food children need. This crisis is preventable with the right resources and policy shifts: - Ensuring access to nutritious food for children even when they are not in school through programs like Summer EBT - Decreasing administrative barriers families face when applying for or accessing benefits CHF will continue to advocate for policies that help prevent the crisis of childhood hunger, over the summer and throughout the year, and we’re proud to support our national network partners who help families cope by connecting them to food access programs, emergency food pantries, and community gardens. Watch our recent webinar on summer hunger to learn more about this issue: https://lnkd.in/eTAh5WgU And visit ChildrensHealthFund.org to support our work advocating for policies to reduce hunger.

Our very own Leslie G. sheds light on the pressing issue of child hunger in NYC in a recent op-ed featured in amNewYork. As #NYC schools switch to summer break, many kids experience reduced access to nutritious meals, leaving families to face the challenge of providing additional meals for their children who heavily rely on free school meals. In a city where 23.5% of children live in food-insecure households—equating to over 416,000 kids struggling to access sufficient nutrition—support from food banks, summer programs, and soup kitchens becomes crucial. Despite the availability of resources, many eligible children miss out due to a lack of awareness or accessibility. It's imperative to enhance access to food assistance programs and resources, like those offered by Food Bank in partnership with community allies. Through our #TeamPeopleGives program, we’re proud to support Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, a local organization dedicated to ending hunger in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties—communities where many of our clients and partners are based. Founded in 1974, Second Harvest, a member of Feeding America, is one of the largest food banks in the nation, serving an average of 500,000 people every month. From groceries to school meal programs, their work ensures families, seniors, and college students have access to nutritious food. Why their work matters: 🏠 Meeting Local Needs: In Silicon Valley’s high-cost environment, they’re a critical resource for those facing food insecurity. 🥗 More Than Food: They educate communities on nutrition, connect people to federal food programs, and advocate for anti-hunger policies. 🤝 Community Impact: Supported by volunteers, donors, and partners, they help households share meals, reduce stress, and build a healthier future. We’re honored to support Second Harvest’s mission to fight hunger and uplift the communities we serve. I did a thing today. A thing that is outside my comfort zone, but oh so important as we Make Hunger History in the state of Minnesota. Over 100 Second Harvest Heartland staff & volunteers, Hunger Solutions Minnesota (part of the The Food Group ) staff & supporters, and other community members & organizations met at the state capitol to raise our voice for change at the 2024 Hunger Day on the Hill. During the meeting with my state representative, I was able to share my experience with a senior in my neighborhood. They posted on our local Facebook group asking for help because their SNAP application must have been processed wrong- they only got $23 a month. I was shocked and confident it was an error until I asked colleagues. Nope, not an error. $23 dollars a month in SNAP benefits. That’s barely a bag of grapes, container of chicken, and loaf of bread in our current economy. I asked my representative to support a bill to increase minimum SNAP benefits for seniors from $23 to $50. It wasn’t scary. It wasn’t intimidating. I was equipped well to make the ask. And I’m glad I took the step to use my voice to advocate for policy that supports hunger relief for today & prevention for tomorrow. Making Hunger History will involve pulling our advocacy levers to create systemic change. If I can do it, you can do it. Let’s do it together. Ready to take the next step in advocacy? Sign up here to receive updates & action steps! https://lnkd.in/guAK7Dkd #MakeHungerHistory #advicacy #publicpolicy P.S. Many thanks to Johnson & Krista for being my advocacy partners today! We’re better together.
