The unfortunate incident in Baltimore has been widely covered by media. Preliminary reports suggest that the container ship, MV Dali, had a complete power failure that led to loss of propulsion. Some of my fellow engineers have raised some very pertinent questions 1. The ship should have been running multiple generators while manoeuvring. A complete loss of power with ship unable to recover from it means that none of the standby generators kicked in. It raises serious questions on the quality of the bunkers. VLSFO caused a havoc in 2020 with multiple liner failures. Biofuel blending is causing froth and choking injectors. It is possible that the fuel went off spec, causing the failure of both the main and auxiliary engines.   2. Ship was manoeuvring through a narrow channel. As a standard operating procedure the port tugs should have been alongside until the ship was clear of channel traffic and manmade installations.
