LISTEN: Calgary Construction Association President and CEO Bill Black joined "Connect with Sarah Crosbie" to discuss the Honour The Work program and the importance of encouraging students into the skilled trades from a young age. Honour The Work, founded by educators and supported by industry leaders, is designed to address the skilled trades labour shortage by sparking interest in these careers at an early age. The heart of the program is the curriculum-aligned STEAMS Kits (Science – Technology – Engineering – Math – Skills), tailored for grades 1-6. These kits offer hands-on activities that bridge classroom learning with real-world skilled trades careers, complete with lesson plans, curricular outcomes, digital resources, building materials, and diverse children’s literature celebrating skilled trades. Are you a university student interested in corrosion of reinforcing steel and attending the American Concrete Institute Fall Convention in Philadelphia November 3-7? As the Chairman of Committee 222 on Corrosion of Metals in Concrete, I am inviting you to attend our committee meeting being held on Tuesday, November 5, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM in the Grand Ballroom Salon G at the Marriott Philadelphia Downtown. I would also love to meet you Monday between 11:30 AM - 12:00 PM in Franklin Hall (Level 4) near convention registration (same room as student competitions) for an informal gathering to introduce ourselves, hear about your interests, and answer any questions you may have about the committee. I want to hear about your passions, learn about your experiences, and see how we can get the next generation involved in our work! All are welcomed to the meeting - whether you want to get involved, are curious about the current initiatives, or just want to meet people that like to think and talk about corrosion. Committee work has been incredibly rewarding for me and I’d like you to experience that! The colleagues, friends, and mentors you meet in meetings and at conferences can last a lifetime. I’ve had the opportunity to learn from some of the brightest in the industry through connections made by simply introducing myself and asking questions. Make sure to introduce yourself to someone that has impacted your studies at the convention and strike up a conversation with a random person next to you. You’d be surprised what (or whom) you might find. I can’t remember who I first saw systemically inviting students to their committee meetings in the past. I think it’s a fantastic idea! Forgive me for borrowing the idea without credit. If it was you, or you know who it was, please tag yourself or them (or message me and I will give them a shout out for the initiative)! #ACI #students #convention #concrete

𝗜 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 I wrote my first JAMB in 2014, hoping to study Civil Engineering at the Federal University of Technology, Akure. Unfortunately, I failed the post-UTME. Did I give up, no. I wrote another JAMB in 2015 and passed, but again, I failed the post-UTME I tried again in 2016, I passed Jamb but once again, post-UTME messed me up. And while I focused all my energy on getting into the university, I didn’t learn any skill. My uncle had even advised me to learn hairdressing, but I refused. I feared standing for long hours because I always saw hairdressers working that way, and I assumed it was some kind of punishment. But as God would have it, in 2016, I miraculously gained admission that same year. It was unexpected but also a reminder that sometimes, things happen when you least expect them. Yes, I wasted those years not learning anything not even computer training the way others were doing. But did I regret it? No.... You may now want to know what I was doing with my life during those period. Well, I became addicted. Calm down it's not what you're thinking (anyways, that's story for another day). The reason I'm sharing this is because 1. Despite failing multiple times, I didn’t give up. The year is winding up, no matter how you've failed, don't write yourself off. You only failed but you are not a failure. 2. Don’t Fear What You Don’t Understand. I feared hairdressing without truly understanding it. Sometimes we let fear stop us from pursuing opportunities that could change our lives. 3. There is a place for divine timing. During those period, there were days I hated myself and hated life. Later, I realised things may not happen when you want them to, but they often happen when you need them the most. Just Trust God. P:S- As instructed by my pastor that we should always share our testimonies. This is one of mine. I'm grateful for those failures. They were blessings in disguise. YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE.
