The state of Uttar Pradesh has been making remarkable strides in Faecal Sludge and Septage Management (FSSM) over recent years, ensuring sustainable #FSSM practices. From fostering an environment for cities to take ownership of treatment infrastructure to developing model documents for #FSSMbylaws and establishing a centralized regulatory framework, Uttar Pradesh is setting #benchmarks in the sector. The latest addition is the launch of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the operation and maintenance of Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs) and Co-Treatment Plants. This SOP is crafted to aid cities in sustaining their FSSM treatment infrastructure. Drawing inspiration from similar documents in Odisha, it has been customized for Uttar Pradesh’s diverse context, featuring over 25 technical + configurations, including nature-based and hybrid systems. It provides: • Standard practices for the operation and maintenance of various technological configurations. • Comprehensive safety protocols to ensure secure handling and maintenance. The Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi (CSE), has been a proud technical partner to Uttar Pradesh. CSE’s expertise has been instrumental in helping the state develop its strategy, roadmap, and essential technical documents, along with on-ground implementation. The SOP can serve as a reference not only for Indian states but also for countries in #SouthEastAsia, #SouthAsia, and Africa striving to improve their FSSM systems. Envisioned as a #backbone document for cities in Uttar Pradesh, the SOP will help sustain operations and scale up successful treatment solutions.
