Myths, legends, and lore are part of the Christian tradition. Historically, Christians have read and made use of even the mythology of paganism -- in Scripture, in the divine services, in iconography, and in the writings of the Church Fathers. Further, a whole world of Christian legends developed over the centuries. In this inaugural episode, Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick (@frandrewstephendamick) and Richard Rohlin (@RichardRohlin) show how the eminent early Church theologian and bishop St. Basil the Great makes the case that Christians not only can but ought to be reading and interpreting non-Christian literature as beneficial to their life in Christ. St. Basil says that Moses knew Egyptian pagan lore, while Daniel was versed in Babylonian paganism. But what is the use of that kind of learning for a Christian? And does that approach still work in the 21st century?

Oliphant, E. (2024). The Double Bond of Catholic Abolition: Christianity, Chattel Slavery, and Racial Capitalism. Journal of Global Catholicism, 8(2), 75-101. Abstract: The reign of the first Pope to originate in the former colonies of the modern Euro-Christian empires calls us into awareness of the layers of interconnection between the Roman Catholic Church and the long “wake” (Sharpe 2016) of 1492. As an anthropologist, I argue, that our studies of Catholic practices must be informed by a detailed awareness of this history. I offer a broad historical view of how the Roman Catholic Church participated and, at times, led the way in initiating the trans-Atlantic system of Black chattel slavery and colonial expropriation in Euro-Christian Empires. As a scholar of Catholicism in France, I then turn to a more detailed examination of the role of French Catholic actors in efforts aimed at slowing abolition and maintaining systems of racialized hierarchy in French colonial territories between 1830 and 1860. Arguments made by some Church actors at the time—as well as the practices of Catholic missionaries and priests—aimed to constrain enslaved people before and following abolition to ensure the continued exploitation of their labor under conditions that would come to be known as racial capitalism. Such efforts were never totalizing and were always variously refused, but the French Catholic Church’s repeated alignment with forces committed to maintaining systems of oppression must shape our analysis of its operations in the present. In Luke 21 Jesus preaches a sermon about the End of the World. The world's end is easier to comprehend when we can compare it to the world around us. That is what Jesus does. He points to things they knew and said amplify that, multiply that—exponentially, then you will understand what is coming. Basically, Jesus describes a Global Final Holocaust—not just of Jews and Christians—but of all humans! Within that message is what amounts to a survival guide for believers who have to exist during the Final Holocaust. Although the believers He is addressing are Tribulation saints, Jewish believers, and those saved through the ministry of the 144,000 Jewish evangelists and the Two Witnesses—the lessons have deep implications for us living in the days just prior to those events. This morning, Christ's words are a call for us to be ready for the onset of the worst time in history. It will begin after the Church is raptured, but the climate of the Tribulation is already here. Are you prepared to survive the storms before the final storm? Hitler’s Holocaust, was horrible as it murdered over six million Jews in the Final Solution—Hitler’s genocide. Briefly, here are the facts: About 1.5 million people died at Auschwitz, of whom about 1.2 million were Jewish. That means that 1/5th of the six million Jews exterminated by Hitler died in this complex Other groups of people who died included Polish political prisoners, Soviet prisoners of war, Gypsies, people with disabilities, and prisoners of conscience or religious faith. The complex contained three camps and at least 36 sub-camps which were built outside the town of Oswiecim, on an isolated 40 sq km site, between 1940 and 1942. If you listened this week there is an incredible comparison that can be drawn between Auschwitz and the Great Tribulation. • Most scholars see the first half of the seven-year final period of the earth’s history to be relatively normal. It is the second half that seems to have incredible destruction, demon armies, and death. So in Bible terms, the Great Tribulation lasts 3 ½ years or 42 months. The Final Holocaust is so terrifying, deadly, and inescapable that God personally steps in to stop it lest not one human be left alive! When we hear the word “spell”, people immediately might think that it belongs to medieval days of witches, warlocks, and wizards who lived in caves and forests, preparing potions and spells in cauldrons. However, this archetype is still very strong in our psyche even today and there are many modern day spellcasters. This blog outlines how they operate in our psyche and how to break out of them.

As we open to Revelation 2:8-11, we are opening to the second of Christ's seven personal letters to individual churches of the late 1st Century. We looked at them as a group, but now we are taking a look at each particular church. As we read these words, the historical context is that the Church at Smyrna was going through the second wave of persecution that the early church had to endure. A Short History of Early Church Persecution Someone told me this week they could save the first half-hour of my messages by just “Google-ing” what I talk about, and implied they wanted me to just stick to reading the text of the Scripture. But for the rest of you that are willing, if you will bear with me, I’d like to give you a sanctified mind’s analysis of Church History: something that they could never get on Google. I share with you the background details of each passage we study to show it to you through the lens of Scripture and with my own lifetime analysis of these facts, which is vital to increasing our understanding. That is actually one of the elements of expository preaching, which is my lifelong pursuit. Church History records three notable waves of persecution from the Roman Emperors: Wave #1: Emperor Nero (54-68 AD) This persecution was sporadic and limited mainly to Rome, sweeping up Paul and Peter to execution. Wave #2: Emperor Domitian (81-96 AD) This persecution was wider than Nero’s, across some of the Roman Empire’s provinces, hitting the church at Smyrna and exiling John to Patmos. Wave #3: Emperor Diocletian (284-305 AD) This persecution was the greatest of any Roman Emperor against Christ's Church. Diocletian, one of the most administrative of all Rome’s rulers, began a systematic purge of Christianity through an Empire-wide eradication of the Church, and he almost succeeded. For the final nearly 10 years of Diocletian’s reign, he systematically decimated Christ's church. The main reason that there is not one single complete manuscript of the Bible today, and all we have are 20,000+ fragments and partial manuscripts, is because of this one very powerful man. Under Diocletian’s wave of persecution, every church meeting place that could be identified was pulled down; every pastor that could be found was killed; and every copy of God’s Word that could be discovered was destroyed. The church came closest to extinction in those years. It is exciting to see that Africans are tapping into the true history of Africa to define who we really are. Its about time we rewrite our history ourselves. Mostly what is available is our history told from an Eurocentric perspective. An Afrocentric perspective has to counter some untrue history of Africa. There is so much the world does not know or want to believe about Africa. There are many 'sweet stories' not just stories of woe that can be told. Yes Africa has its problems like every continent, Nigeria has its problem like any country but we must be positive and look for solutions together, not condemnation. Let's celebrate the little steps of great things Africa and countries within do and gradually we shall overcome. But remember. No continent or country is perfect. NIGERIA WE HAIL THEE - OUR OWN DEAR NATIVE LAND. These words mean so much too me. Let's hail Nigeria 🇳🇬 Let's hail Africa 🌍 When you are charged you do wonders. Charge Nigeria 🇳🇬 to do wonders. My family is teaching I believe. - Father Estate Surveyor - Mother Montessori - Sister Economics - Me Law - Brother Business Administration ( my parents taught and built schools which thousands of children have passed through, us children are still teaching and uplifting the schools established and teaching in other schools).
Passionate about seeing the Alkebulan of my dream emerge. I am unapologetically African. We are building the Emerging Alkebulan. Titles don't matter. Disrupting the status quo. Thought provoker. Pan African to the core.
Your Ancestoral lineage history is your super power. 👌🏾 Knowing your history will erase the shrouded mystery. My Alkebulan brothers and sisters. we need to know who we are and own it. #Oladelesthoughts
